Chapter 10 - A Better List for Grown-Ups

Elias did come back.
Not by himself.
Not untouched.
Not quickly enough to erase what Harper endured.
But he came back through the evidence he left, the child who held on, the officer who listened, and the truth that survived rain.
The last line of the list changed over time.
First:
Harper, I am coming back.
Then:
Harper, we are coming back.
And finally, on the fifth anniversary of the storm, Harper rewrote it one more time on a clean card and taped it beside the front door.
If someone is missing, knock before you guess.
Sarah saw it during a visit and smiled.
“That’s good.”
Harper nodded.
“I’m making a better list.”
“For what?”
“For grown-ups.”
Elias laughed from the kitchen.
Sarah looked at the rain beginning again outside.
