Chapter 1 - They Said You’d Disappear

Michael came home early with his daughter’s stuffed rabbit in his hand and found her standing against the dining-room wall like a prisoner.
The breakfast table was set for four.
Silverware.
Coffee.
Fresh fruit.
Toast cooling on porcelain plates.
And one small untouched breakfast plate sitting at the far end of the table, just out of reach.
Lila stood facing the wall beneath the staircase.
Six years old.
Tangled brown hair.
Pale sweater.
Dark leggings.
Barely moving.
Her shoulders were too still for a child.
Catherine stood behind her, blonde hair perfect, cream blouse tucked into a dark skirt, one hand gripping Lila’s small shoulder.
“Face the wall,” Catherine snapped. “You haven’t earned breakfast.”
Michael froze in the front doorway.
The stuffed rabbit slipped from his hand and hit the marble floor.
Catherine turned.
For one second, her face showed pure shock.
Then Lila turned too.
Her eyes widened.
“Daddy?”
Catherine raised her hand.
Not toward Michael.
Toward the child.
Michael moved.
Catherine’s hand swung toward Lila’s cheek, but Michael caught her wrist inches before contact and forced it down.
“Take your hand off my daughter.”
He pulled Lila behind him.
Richard, Michael’s father, rose from the breakfast table in his dark suit, face hard with authority.
“This is discipline, not abuse.”
He grabbed Michael’s lapels.
Michael tore his father’s hands away and shoved him once in the chest.
Strong.
Controlled.
Hard enough to send Richard stumbling backward into a dining chair.
Not enough to make him fall.
Eleanor, Michael’s mother, lowered her eyes.
She said nothing.
She had always been best at that.
Michael dropped to one knee and lifted Lila securely into his arms. She wrapped both arms around his neck with desperate strength, burying her face against his collar.
Her body was shaking.
Michael held her tighter.
“It’s okay,” he whispered. “I’m here.”
Lila lifted her face just enough to look past him at Catherine, Richard, and Eleanor.
Then she whispered seven words that drained every adult face in the room.
“They said you’d disappear if I told you.”
Michael slowly looked up.
Catherine’s confidence collapsed.
Richard froze.
Eleanor’s eyes filled with shame she still did not have the courage to speak through.

And Michael finally understood that he had not walked into one cruel morning.
He had walked into three stolen years.
