Chapter 7 - The Dramatic Version

Years later, people still told the dramatic version.

The rainy American overpass.

The black limousine skidding into the broken barrier.

The front end hanging partly over the edge.

The elderly woman pressing one hand to the intact rear window.

Please… help me.

The severed electrical cable snapping blue sparks beside the car.

Grace dropping her lunch.

Running to the emergency disconnect.

Slamming it down.

The sparks stopping.

The bodyguard yelling, Stay back!

Grace grabbing the insulated pry bar.

I’m a line worker—move!

The single strike to the lower corner of the rear window.

Safety glass fracturing.

Hold still!

The limousine shifting.

The second bodyguard staring at his phone.

Do you know whose grandmother that is?

Grace reaching toward the frightened woman anyway.

No, and right now, I don’t care.

It sounded like bravery.

And yes, part of it was.
