Chapter 6 - Diane Finally Told Brad the Marriage Ended Because Thomas Asked Her to Lie
Diane requested to see Brad during his suspension.
He refused the first time.
Then agreed after his school counselor said no one could force him to forgive or choose sides, but avoiding information was still a choice.
They met in a family therapist’s office.
Thomas was not there.
Brad sat with his arms folded.
Diane looked at him for several seconds.
“You hurt Lily.”
“She kicked me.”
“You grabbed her.”
“She was threatening Dad.”
Diane closed her eyes.
“There.”
“What?”
“You are still protecting him from information.”
Brad stared.
Diane reached into her bag.
Not a dramatic secret file.
A copy of an email Brad had already seen in Thomas’s office.
She placed it on the table.
Brad did not touch it.
“I know.”
Diane stopped.
“What?”
“I saw it.”
“When?”
“Months ago.”
Her face changed.
“You knew?”
“I knew you blamed him.”
“No.”
“That’s what it says.”
Diane leaned forward.
“I left because your father asked me to tell Hawthorne’s outside investigator that I had never seen finance emails about the Crescendo transfer.”
Brad stared at her.
“He wanted me to say Emma misunderstood ordinary accounting. I knew she hadn’t.”
“You gave her the emails.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because the scholarship money was restricted.”
“It got paid back.”
“Later.”
“No one stole it.”
“I never said anyone stole it.”
Brad looked away.
This distinction had been missing from every family story he heard.
Thomas had not pocketed scholarship money.
He had pushed a financially improper transfer to finish an over-budget music project and then tried to make the paperwork look more authorized than it was.
Wrong.
Not cartoon theft.
Diane continued.
“I disagreed with him privately. He told me I was embarrassing him.”
Brad said nothing.
“Then he asked me to back his version formally.”
“You could’ve just refused.”
“I did.”
“And then left?”
“Not immediately.”
Diane explained.
The marriage had problems before the fund dispute.
Thomas worked constantly.
Diane felt managed rather than heard.
Thomas felt Diane embarrassed him publicly.
They had been discussing counseling.
The Crescendo investigation became the event that exposed how little trust remained.
Then Thomas discovered Diane had given Emma emails.
He called it betrayal.
Diane called it refusing to participate in concealment.
They tried counseling for seven months.
Failed.
Then separated.
“Emma did not end our marriage.”
Brad finally looked at her.
“She made everything public.”
“No.”
“She sued.”
“After she lost her job.”
“She could have walked away.”
Diane stared.
“So could I. So could your father. Everybody could have chosen silence. Why is Emma the only person you think was obligated to?”
Brad had no answer.
Then Diane said:
“You have been cruel to Lily because you needed her mother to stay guilty.”
Brad’s face hardened.
“You don’t know what she says.”
“I know you put your hands on a younger girl.”
“She was going to tell everyone.”
“Tell them what?”
Brad looked away.
“That Dad lied.”
Diane’s voice softened.
“Did he?”
Brad did not answer.
Then Diane asked:
“What are you actually afraid will happen if people know?”
That question broke through.
Brad’s father had built his identity around Hawthorne.
Trustee.
Donor.
Alumni family.
Brad was a varsity athlete and advanced music student partly because his family had always belonged there.
If Thomas became the villain in the story, Brad feared his entire position would become contaminated.
People would look at:
him
and see:
his father.
The same thing Brad had been doing to Lily.
Diane told him that.
He became furious.
Then quiet.
Because it was true.
He had decided Lily was Emma Carter’s daughter before he decided she was Lily.
Then the therapist asked Brad:
“Do you hate Emma?”
Brad took a long time.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because every time I hear her name, I remember the day Mom left.”
Diane’s eyes filled.
“I am sorry.”
Brad looked at her.
Diane continued.
“But remembering Emma’s name next to that day does not make Emma the cause.”
Brad started crying.
Not dramatically.
Angrily.
The kind of crying that seemed to make him hate himself more.
Then he said the thing nobody expected.
“I know.”
Diane stared.
Brad continued.
“I’ve known for months.”
That was the real secret behind his fear in the music room.
He had not attacked Lily because he genuinely believed every word Thomas said.
