Chapter 8 - I Want To

But Elena knew the deeper victory was quieter.

It was not Victoria’s fear.

It was not the guards stepping forward.

It was not even the charity boards removing her name.

It was Luca hearing someone ask what he wanted before deciding where he belonged.

It was a wheelchair finally treated as part of a child’s body, not an obstacle in a photograph.

It was a powerful father realizing that protection without dignity can still leave a child lonely.

It was a server with a red cheek becoming the person who changed how an entire foundation trained its donors.

And it was Luca, years later, rolling onto the dance floor at the Open Floor gala in a black tuxedo, older now, taller, grinning nervously while Elena stood nearby with a clipboard.

“You ready?” she asked.

He looked at the crowd.

Then at his father.

Dante stood at the edge of the room, no guards close enough to crowd the moment.

Just watching.

Luca looked back at Elena.

“What if everyone stares?”

Elena smiled.

“They probably will.”

“That’s not helpful.”

“It’s honest.”

He laughed.

Then asked, “What do I do?”

Elena held out one hand.

“The same thing I asked you the first night.”

Luca lifted an eyebrow.

“Dance?”

“No,” she said. “Want to.”

He looked at the open floor.

At the other children waiting.

At the space no one had pushed him out of.

Then Luca smiled.

May you like

“I want to.”

And this time, when the music started, nobody stopped it.
