Chapter 13 - Laurel Got Back More Than The Original Money

The final civil settlement regarding Laurel’s custodial assets occurred almost eighteen months after discovery.

Conrad agreed to repay the clearly unsupported withdrawals, plus negotiated lost-growth compensation and legal costs.

My own liability as former custodian was also addressed.

I contributed.

Voluntarily at first, then formally.

Laurel resisted.

“Mom, you didn’t know.”

“I signed.”

“He manipulated the paperwork.”

“I still had a duty to read what concerned your money.”

We compromised.

My contribution was smaller than Conrad’s but real.

That mattered to me.

Not because I wanted punishment.

Because apology without accepting any cost would have felt incomplete.

The recovered money went into an investment account entirely under Laurel’s control.

No family manager.

No stepfather.

No mother.

Hers.

When the final transfer cleared, she called me.

“It’s weird.”

“What?”

“I thought I’d feel rich.”

I smiled.

“How do you feel?”

“Tired.”

“That sounds right.”

Then she said:

“I’m using some of it for the condo down payment.”

“Your dad would like that.”

“You think?”

“Yes.”

David had wanted the money to give her choices.

Not luxury.

Choices.

Finally, after two decades of adults deciding around her, that was exactly what it became.
