Chapter 15 - The Next Suitcase Meant a Real Trip

Months later, near the start of summer, Dominic set a small blue overnight bag in the living room for a weekend beach trip.
Nothing elaborate.
Just two nights away.
He had rented a cottage.
Owen had packed snacks.
Lily had insisted on bringing a ridiculous number of hair bows.
The black suitcase was gone from the house.
Donated.
Replaced in memory by something else.
Still, when Lily first saw the blue bag, she stopped in the doorway.
Dominic noticed immediately.
He knelt in front of her.
“You okay?”
She looked at the bag, then at him.
“This one is for coming back too, right?”
That question hit him like a hand around the heart.
“Yes,” he said gently. “This one is for going together and coming back together.”
Lily studied his face.
Then she nodded.
“Okay.”
Owen came bounding in with a backpack almost larger than his torso.
“Can I bring the flashlight this time?”
Dominic smiled.
“Yes.”
Lily walked over to the little blue bag and set her stuffed yellow duck inside it.
Then she turned and ran back to her father.
He caught her easily.
For a second, he held both children close and looked around the kitchen and entryway where so much had changed.
The white cabinets were the same.
The hardwood floor was the same.
The front door was the same.
But the house no longer belonged to fear.
That afternoon, before they left, Lily paused by the family photos on the wall and pointed to the picture of her mother.
“Mom would like the beach trip.”
“She would,” Dominic said.
Then Lily slipped her small hand into his.
And when the three of them finally walked out the front door, there was no dread attached to the sight of a packed bag.
Only sunlight.
Only movement.
May you like
Only the quiet certainty that this time, every child leaving that house was going exactly where they were supposed to go—
and coming safely home again.
