Chapter 9 - The Card Inside The Red Box

After Victoria entered the room and the ring hit the floor, Dad bent down and picked it up.

Then he unfolded the card from the red box.

He read it once silently.

Then he handed it to Victoria.

Gene reached for it. “That belongs to me.”

“No,” Victoria said. “It never did.”

Later, Dad let me read the card too.

It was written in Grandpa Arthur’s careful script.

For Ava,

If this reaches your hands, then I was right to worry.

A child should never have to prove she belongs to the people who were supposed to love her first.

This ring has been kept for the person in this family with the clearest heart.

Do not let anyone teach you otherwise.

Love,

Grandpa

I cried the first time I read it.

Not because of the money.

At seven, I barely understood what “trust power” meant.

I cried because someone had seen me.

Fully.

Years before I understood I needed that kind of protection.

Grandpa Arthur had known Gene might one day try to erase me socially, emotionally, or legally.

And instead of hoping she’d change, he built a consequence.

There is a kind of love that comforts you.

May you like

And another kind that prepares shelter before the storm arrives.

He had done the second.
