Chapter 10 - Rescue Was Everything After

On the fifth anniversary of the greenhouse rescue, Tyler stood in the open garden where the glass walls used to trap heat.
He was eighteen now.
Taller than Matthew.
Still blond, still quiet, still carrying some shadows in his shoulders.
Sunflowers rose around him, taller than both of them.
Owen, twelve now, ran through the rows chasing a dog Matthew had sworn they were not keeping and absolutely kept.
Melissa sat on the porch with iced tea.
Matthew stood beside Tyler.
Neither spoke for a while.
Then Tyler said, “I used to hate this place.”
Matthew nodded.
“I know.”
“Then I hated that I didn’t hate it all the time.”
“That makes sense.”
“Does it?”
“Yes.”
Tyler looked at him.
“You always say that now.”
“Because I didn’t say it enough then.”
Tyler looked back at the sunflowers.
The old greenhouse foundation was still faintly visible under the soil if you knew where to look.
He took a breath.
“I don’t think I forgive Lauren.”
“You don’t have to.”
“I think I forgive you sometimes.”
Matthew’s eyes filled.
He did not move.
Did not grab.
Did not ask for more.
“Thank you,” he said.
Tyler glanced at him.
“Sometimes.”
Matthew nodded quickly.
“Sometimes is more than I deserve.”
Tyler smiled faintly.
“Therapy words.”
“Garden words.”
“That makes no sense.”
“I know.”
Owen shouted from between the sunflowers.
“The dog stole my shoe!”
Tyler looked at Matthew.
“Still think we’re not keeping him?”
Matthew sighed.
“We are apparently keeping a criminal.”
Tyler laughed.
Not loudly.
But freely enough that Matthew had to look away for a second.
The sun was hot that day.
But not trapped.
The air moved.
The door was gone.
The glass was gone.
No locks.
No numbers.
No empty bottles.
May you like
Just open ground, loud sunflowers, a boy laughing, another boy chasing a dog, and a father learning every day that rescue was not the moment he broke the door.
Rescue was everything he did after.
