Chapter 8 - Gone From Us

Nathaniel made his own list.

Inside his circle:

Listen the first time.

Come home when warned.

Check records.

Believe fear.

Outside his circle:

Undo the past.

Caroline’s death.

Ava’s memories.

Marianne’s choices.

He hated the outside circle.

But healing required telling the truth about what even love could not reverse.

The criminal case against Marianne took nearly a year.

Her attorneys argued stress.

Misunderstanding.

A child’s grief.

A household discipline plan gone wrong.

Then prosecutors played the audio.

You will be gone before he comes back.

The courtroom changed after that.

Even Marianne’s attorney stopped using the word misunderstanding.

Marianne accepted a plea before trial completed, facing consequences for child endangerment, assault, unlawful restraint, and evidence-related offenses connected to disabling interior cameras.

Nathaniel did not attend her sentencing alone.

He brought Grace Whitcomb.

Mrs. Bell came too.

Ava did not.

She was at school, where she belonged.

Nathaniel gave a victim impact statement.

He did not shout.

He did not describe revenge.

He looked at Marianne once and said, “You tried to make my daughter believe love was conditional on silence. You failed.”

Marianne looked away first.

That was the only victory he wanted from her.

The estate changed after that.

Some rooms were closed.

Some opened.

Caroline’s photographs returned to the hallway.

Her blue scarf hung by the front door.

The nursery stayed warm.

The long marble hallway remained difficult for Ava, so Nathaniel covered part of it with a thick runner rug, soft enough for bare feet, bright enough that the cold stone no longer owned the space.

At Ava’s request, the old belt was not destroyed.

It was sealed in evidence for the case.

Afterward, Nathaniel asked if she wanted never to see it again.

She said, “I want it gone from us.”

So Grace arranged for it to be retained in the legal archive, not returned to the family.

Gone from us.

Nathaniel repeated that phrase often.

About Marianne’s furniture.

Marianne’s perfume.

Marianne’s rules.

May you like

Marianne’s voice.

Gone from us.
