Chapter 5 - The House Was Hers

Meera laughed nervously.
“This is his house.”
Cassie looked at her.
“No. It’s my father’s house.”
Meera’s expression flickered.
Tony’s eyes darkened.
There it was.
The thing beneath the affair.
The house.
The trust.
The quiet inheritance Tony could not access without Cassie signing the marital asset consolidation agreement he had been pushing for months.
The same agreement Meera once called “just paperwork.”
Cassie looked at Tony.
“That’s what this was really about, wasn’t it?”
He said nothing.
She continued.
“You thought if you made me look unstable, you could get control of the trust before the annual review.”
Meera stared at him.
“Tony?”
He snapped, “Be quiet.”
Cassie smiled faintly.
Meera finally heard the voice that had been reserved for the wife.
Good.
Let her hear it.
The phone buzzed in Cassie’s hand.
A call came through.
Mara.
Cassie answered and put it on speaker.
Mara’s voice filled the room, calm and precise.
“Cassie, I have the recording. Are you safe?”
Tony’s face turned white.
Cassie looked at him.
“Not yet.”
Mara did not hesitate.
“Police are on the way. Stay visible. Do not let him take the phone.”
Meera whispered, “Police?”
Tony lunged one step.
Cassie pulled the phone back.
Mara’s voice sharpened.
“Tony, if you move closer, that will be added to the active recording.”
He stopped.
His hands curled into fists at his sides.
Cassie watched him fight every instinct he had.
Not because he had become less violent.
Because consequences had entered the room.
Downstairs, a knock sounded at the front door minutes later.
Then voices.
Then footsteps.
Tony’s party guests began whispering.
The bedroom door opened only when Cassie unlocked it herself.
Two officers entered first, followed by Mara Ellison in a dark coat, hair still damp from rain, eyes going straight to Cassie’s face.
For one second, Mara’s expression cracked.
Then she regained control.
“Cassie.”
Cassie’s chin trembled.
“I recorded it.”
“I know,” Mara said. “You did exactly right.”
Tony spoke over her.
“She’s manipulating this. She attacked Meera downstairs. She’s drunk and hysterical.”
Mara looked around the bedroom.
Broken compact.
Bruises.
Tony’s hand still red at the knuckles from gripping too hard.
Meera wearing the missing necklace.
Cassie on the bed, shaking but holding the phone.
May you like
Mara’s voice went flat.
“Then I assume you won’t object to giving a statement.”
