Chapter 22 - THE ATTORNEY WHO CHANGED SIDES

Malcolm Rusk had worked for Elias Ward for eleven years.
He did not call himself innocent.
That was why Reese listened.
They met inside the memorial garden’s administrative office with Naomi, Harlan, Bell, and two federal marshals present.
Rusk placed his phone and briefcase on the table.
“Ward recruited me after my wife died. He paid my debts, funded my son’s treatment, and gave me cases I believed protected national interests.”
“When did you learn what Meridian was doing?” Naomi asked.
“Gradually. That is how institutions make guilt survivable.”
Reese watched him.
“And now?”
“Now he plans to use a child transfer order to stage an abduction under federal seal.”
“Why warn us?”
Rusk looked toward Lily, who sat outside with Paige.
“Because my son asked why I was helping people take a girl from her mother.”
No one spoke.
Children had a way of making complicated corruption sound exactly as ugly as it was.
Rusk explained Ward’s plan.
At the hearing, a federal liaison would claim an imminent threat required Lily’s temporary relocation. A transport team would take her through a restricted route to a secure facility.
The team would be Meridian contractors wearing government credentials.
The convoy would enter the church tunnel and emerge with a different vehicle.
Lily’s official record would show she reached the secure facility.
She would not.
Bell asked, “Where would they take her?”
“Ward has a property outside Virginia registered to a medical research trust.”
Harlan’s jaw tightened.
“Sedation?”
“Yes.”
“Interrogation?”
“Memory extraction protocols.”
Selah, listening through a secure call, whispered, “She is twelve.”
Rusk closed his eyes.
“To Ward, that means her memory is still recoverable.”
Reese stood.
“We are not letting her enter the convoy.”
Naomi warned that refusing a federal custody order could make Reese a fugitive and damage the case permanently.
“Then we change the hearing,” Reese said.
“How?”
“We make Ward believe the transfer is happening.”
The plan required deception inside a courtroom.
Lily would appear remotely from a protected location. A decoy transport would depart with a young federal agent matching her size beneath a hood and blanket.
Meanwhile, Reese, Naomi, and Rusk would enter the foundation headquarters using the emergency compliance authority triggered by the custody case.
Room 714.
The decoding index.
Proof strong enough to end Ward’s control before he realized Lily was never in the convoy.
Lily objected.
“You are making everyone else the decoy.”
Reese sat beside her.
“You are the target.”
“I am also part of the plan.”
“You helped decode the message.”
“That was before.”
Reese understood.
Before adults resumed deciding.
She gave Lily a secure communication role. Lily would monitor Daniel’s audio clues with Selah and alert Reese if Ward changed the route.
It was not field exposure.
It was not symbolic participation.
It was necessary.
At 8:00 a.m., the judge approved the temporary transfer based on the federal liaison’s sealed statement.
Rusk did not argue.
Ward watched from the rear bench.
His expression remained calm.
Outside, cameras captured the decoy entering a black transport van.
Ward left the courthouse.
The van began moving toward the church.
At the same time, Reese, Naomi, Rusk, and Bell entered the foundation building with a court compliance order.
The elevator reached the seventh floor.
Room 714 opened with Daniel’s brass key and the phrase from the memorial entered into a keypad.
Inside were walls of files.
Financial records.
Photographs.
Psychological profiles.
Children’s names.
Lily’s file sat on the center table.
Before Reese could open it, the elevator alarm sounded.
Ward’s voice came through the room speaker.
“Malcolm, I wondered how long guilt would make you careless.”
Steel shutters dropped over the windows.
The door locked.
Then Lily’s voice came through Reese’s earpiece.
“Mom, the convoy route changed.”
“Where?”
“Not the church.”
A pause.
“The foundation building.”
Reese looked toward the sealed elevator.
May you like
Ward had known about the decoy.
And he was bringing the trap directly to them.
