Chapter 1 - The Closet Door He Kicked Open

The first sound Daniel Reed heard was not his wife’s voice.
It was knocking.
Weak.
Uneven.
Coming from behind the locked bedroom door.
He ran down the hallway of his own house with his jacket half-zipped, phone still in his hand, his sister’s last whispered call replaying in his mind.
Danny… closet… please…
Then the line had cut off.
The master bedroom door was locked.
Daniel did not knock.
He kicked it open.
The door slammed against the wall.
Inside, his wife, Vanessa, jumped up from beside the bed, wearing an elegant evening outfit that suddenly looked like a costume.
A man Daniel recognized from their investment office stood behind her, expensive shirt wrinkled, face white with panic.
Mark Ellison.
Vanessa’s hand flew to her throat.
“It’s not what it looks like—”
Then the knocking came again.
From the closet.
Daniel turned.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“No, Daniel, wait—”

He crossed the room and yanked the closet door open.
His sister collapsed partly into his arms.
Emily Reed was twenty-four, barefoot, shaking, holding a phone with a dying battery in one trembling hand.
Her face was bruised and swollen.
Her lip was lightly split.
Her hair was tangled around her tear-streaked cheeks.
For one second, Daniel could not breathe.
Then his arms closed around her.
“Who did this to you?”
Emily did not speak.
She only lifted one shaking hand and pointed.
At Vanessa.
Then at Mark.
Daniel slowly stood, placing Emily behind him with one arm.
Vanessa took one nervous step forward.
“Daniel, she misunderstood—”
He struck her across the face.
One hard open-hand slap.
Vanessa fell sideways onto the bedroom floor, stunned, one hand clutched to her cheek.
Mark backed toward the bed, color draining from his face.
Daniel did not chase him.
He did not need to.
His sister was behind him.
That was where his body stayed.
Vanessa looked up from the floor, shaking.
Daniel’s voice was icy and controlled.
“The phone she used to call me recorded everything.”
The room went dead silent.
Emily clung to Daniel’s arm.
Vanessa’s eyes moved to the phone in Emily’s hand.
Mark’s lips parted, but no sound came out.
