Chapter 1 - The Dog Bowl in the Midnight Kitchen

The spoon hit the dog bowl with a tiny metal clink.

That sound stayed with Marcus Vale longer than the slap.

Longer than Cassandra’s scream.

Longer than the police lights outside his mansion.

Because it was small.

Weak.

Terrified.

The sound of his seven-year-old daughter dropping a spoon because she had just looked up and realized her father was standing in the kitchen doorway.

Lily Vale sat on the cold marble floor in pale pajamas, knees tucked under her, tear streaks shining on her cheeks.

Beside her was a stainless steel dog bowl.

Cassandra stood over her in a silk robe, blonde hair perfect even at midnight, one finger pointed down like Lily was something dirty on the floor.

Her voice was low and cold.

“Eat where you belong.”

Marcus froze.

For half a second, his mind refused the scene.

This was his kitchen.

His house.

His daughter.

The woman standing over Lily was supposed to become his wife in six weeks.

Cassandra turned sharply when she saw him.

Her perfect face cracked.

Lily whispered, “Daddy…”

Marcus crossed the kitchen without saying a word.

He knelt beside his daughter, pulled her gently away from the bowl, and wrapped one arm around her shaking body.

Then he looked up at Cassandra.

His voice was low.

Dangerous.

“Step away from my daughter.”

Cassandra lifted both hands.

“Marcus, she was having a tantrum. I was just—”

He stood.

Moved Lily behind him.

Then his hand struck Cassandra across the face.

One sharp open-hand slap.

Her head snapped sideways.

Before she could recover, Marcus shoved her backward, away from Lily, forcing her into the edge of the kitchen island.

The silk robe twisted around her shoulders.

Her eyes widened, more offended than hurt.

Marcus’s voice exploded through the kitchen.

“You fed my daughter like a dog.”

Cassandra touched her cheek.

“You don’t understand.”

Marcus lifted his phone.

His thumb tapped once.

On the screen, silent security footage showed Cassandra minutes earlier, gripping Lily’s arm, forcing her down beside the dog bowl, placing the spoon in her hand.

Cassandra’s face drained of color.

Behind Marcus, Lily clung to his robe with both small hands.

Marcus stared at the woman he had almost married.

“The camera already destroyed you.”

The kitchen went silent except for Lily’s shaky breathing.

And in that silence, Marcus understood the most terrifying truth of his life.

This had not started tonight.

Tonight was only the first time he woke up early enough to see it.
