Chapter 5 - Not Anymore

Mrs. Bell moved aside as Grace Ellison entered.
She was smaller than Michael expected.
That seemed to offend him.
Grace wore a gray suit, carried a leather satchel, and looked at the dining room without surprise.
Behind her stood a process server with rain on his coat and papers in one hand.
No police.
No shouting.
No dramatic raid.
Just paper.
That was what frightened Michael most.
Violence he understood.
Paper was supposed to belong to him.
Grace looked at Nora first.
“Are you safe where you’re sitting?”
Michael laughed.
“This is absurd.”
Grace did not look at him.
Nora answered, “For the next minute, yes.”
Grace nodded.
“Good.”
The process server stepped forward.
“Michael Whitmore?”
Michael did not take the papers.
The man placed them on the table beside the folder.
“You’ve been served.”
Evelyn’s lips parted.
Tessa sat down slowly.
Michael stared at the papers like they were insects.
Grace finally turned to him.
“Mr. Whitmore, the court has issued a temporary protective order, an emergency preservation order regarding household recordings, medical records, and financial documents, and a temporary freeze on transfers involving Mrs. Whitmore’s separate property and disputed marital authority.”
Michael’s face flushed.
“You think a dinner argument gets you that?”
Grace looked at Nora’s cast.
“No. The court found the dinner argument helpful but not singular.”
Nora almost smiled.
Michael caught it and fury moved through him.
“She’s manipulating you.”
Grace opened her satchel and removed a slim folder.
“I certainly hope so. It would be embarrassing if my client hired me and did nothing.”
Tessa whispered, “Michael…”
He rounded on her.
“Shut up.”
The word landed ugly.
Not because he had never said it.
Because he had forgotten the room was no longer his.
Grace’s eyes moved toward Nora’s phone on the table.
“Was that captured?”
Nora nodded.
Michael’s expression changed.
He looked at the phone.
Then at the wineglass.
Then at her cast.
Only then did he understand she had been recording before the steak.
He stepped toward her.
Grace’s voice cut through the room.
“One more step toward my client and I will request immediate enforcement tonight.”
Michael stopped.
Evelyn recovered enough to stand straighter.
“This family handles matters privately.”
Grace turned to her.
“Not anymore.”
Evelyn’s face tightened with a kind of offense older than law.
Tessa looked from Michael to Nora, then to the folder on the table.
“What is in those papers?”
Nora answered without looking away from Michael.
“My silence.”
Tessa’s eyes widened.
Michael’s jaw locked.
Grace placed another document on the table.
“And apparently, a physician’s declaration prepared before the injury it references. That was an ambitious touch.”
Evelyn went still.
Tessa whispered, “Before?”
Nora looked at Tessa then.
Really looked.
Tessa had laughed at the cast.
At the plate.
At the humiliation.
But now there was something uncertain under the sequins.
Nora said, “He planned to call me unstable before he broke my wrist.”
Tessa’s eyes moved to Michael.
For the first time in years, she looked afraid of her brother.
Michael saw it.
That made him more dangerous.
He reached for the unsigned folder.
Grace moved faster.
She placed her hand on top of it.
“Preserved.”
Michael’s mouth twisted.
“That folder belongs to me.”
May you like
Grace smiled faintly.
“Then you’ll be pleased to see it handled with such care.”
