Chapter 9 - Truth-Teller

A dying woman refusing to let the room close around a lie.
She could not explain.
Could not testify.
Could not stand at her daughter’s crib and name the people who had chosen money, reputation, and control over her life.
So she held on.
To thread.
To proof.
To the smallest object available.
And because she held on, Julián found the question everyone feared.
On Sofia’s tenth birthday, Julián took her to the lakeside cemetery where Camila was buried.
Not on the first birthday.
Not the fifth.
The tenth.
Old enough to ask.
Young enough to still bring flowers picked with too much stem.
Sofia stood before the stone.
CAMILA ELISE VALE
Wife. Mother. Truth-Teller.
Sofia traced the letters.
“Truth-teller is a job?”
Julián smiled sadly.
“Sometimes.”
“Was Mommy one?”
“Yes.”
“Are you?”
“I try.”
“Am I?”
He looked at her.
“You will be if you choose to be.”
She placed white flowers at the grave.
Then took a folded card from her pocket.
“What is that?”
“A birthday card for her.”
Julián’s eyes filled.
“Do you want me to read it?”
“No. It’s private.”
He nodded.
“Of course.”
She tucked the card beneath the flowers and stood quietly.
After a minute, she reached for his hand.
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“Did she know I lived?”
Julián closed his eyes.
The question had waited ten years.
May you like
He opened them.
“I think she fought because she believed you would.”
