Chapter 6 - SURGERY MORNING

I almost canceled. Not because of fear of anesthesia. Because every person around me had turned the procedure into evidence. Federal agents. Hospital compliance. Northbridge. Marvin. Mara. Even media had started calling after leak. “Wheelchair Woman Robbery Linked to Medical Charity Probe.” I hated it. I was not a case. I was trying to walk. Then Dr. Wells came into pre-op. He said: “We can postpone.” I looked at him. “Medically?” “No reason.” “Legally?” “Not my lane.” Good. Then: “Do you think I should?” He stopped. “No. I think you should decide without everyone else owning the meaning.” That answer settled me. I signed. Then Marvin waited outside with Titan because Titan could not enter sterile area. Before they wheeled me away, Marvin handed me the leather bag. Empty. Repaired. “Thought you might want it.” I ran fingers over torn seam. “No.” He nodded. Then I changed mind. “Actually, yes.”

Not for cash. For reminder. Then surgery. Six hours. No miracle montage. When I woke, pain everywhere. I could move toes on right. Left? Nothing. Panic. Then surgeon said swelling. Too early. Wait. I hated wait. Then next day, left big toe moved. Tiny. Everyone celebrated too much. I cried anyway. Then federal raids. Northbridge offices searched. Elliot Crane placed on administrative leave by board. Derek detained in Mexico pending extradition. Kyle Mercer still missing. Then code from stolen letter. Federal cyber team found authorization code linked to a shadow portal Northbridge used for “recovery adjustments.” That was evidence. Kyle stealing letter after robbery suggested he was cleaning up for someone. Then apartment camera showed him leaving with another man. Face partially visible. Marvin recognized. Not Elliot. Not Derek. Samuel Voss. Northbridge head of risk. Former federal contractor.

Higher operational authority. Then old Marvin report had Voss named. He was the one who terminated Marvin’s contract. There. Then Voss disappeared. Company claimed vacation. No. Then federal agents found his home empty. Then one message on burner seized from Derek: VOSS: CFO knows numbers, not methods. That changed Elliot’s role. Maybe Elliot authorized financial manipulations without knowing robberies. Still serious. But violence perhaps Voss/Derek. Then another: EC wants ratios fixed before board. Do not involve him in field. There. Elliot wanted metrics fixed. Could be criminal financial intent. But field violence compartmentalized. Good nuance. Then I started rehab. Standing frame. First attempt: Thirty seconds. Dizzy. Terrifying. Second: One minute. Then parallel bars. My legs felt like strangers. Marvin visited rarely. He did not want to turn rescue into relationship. I appreciated.

Then Titan came to rehab courtyard. I cried harder seeing dog than standing. He licked my hand. Then Marvin said: “He remembers.” “So do I.” Then Mara arrived. Kyle Mercer had been arrested. He was trying to cross into Canada. He had the stolen surgeon letter. Why keep it? Because Voss told him code was worth his “way out.” Then Kyle cooperated. He said: “Voss said if Chloe’s case blew up, Northbridge was done.” Then: “Did he order robbery?” “Yes.” “Threat?” “Yes.” “Apartment break-in?” “Yes.” Then: “Did he order anyone killed?” Kyle said: “No.” Emily Ross? “No.” Good. Her death remained accident. Then Voss’s location. Kyle knew safe house. Federal agents moved. But before arrest, Voss sent one message. To me. You think they saved you. They used you too. I stared. Who? Then another: Ask Marvin why Emily chose you. My stomach tightened. Maybe there was still something Marvin had not told me. Again.
