Chapter 7 - THE SECOND AVALANCHE

The avalanche alarm came too late.

Snow broke loose high above the lodge and swept across the upper slope in a white wall.

Michael ran toward the maintenance gondola.

He still had the drive.

Daniel, bleeding from the shoulder, followed despite Ross ordering him to stop.

“You are injured!”

“He is heading toward the ridge station.”

The gondola connected the lodge to a communications tower across the valley. If Michael reached it, he could access a private aircraft pad and disappear into miles of mountain terrain.

Daniel clipped a rescue line to his harness and crossed the exposed platform.

Wind tore at his jacket.

Michael entered the gondola cabin.

Daniel reached the door before it closed.

The two men struggled inside as the cabin moved over the valley.

Below them, the avalanche struck the lodge.

Snow shattered windows and buried the lower floor.

Federal agents took shelter inside reinforced sections.

The gondola swung violently.

Michael slammed Daniel against the glass.

“You should have let her die.”

Daniel hit him once.

Not with anger.

With thirty-one years of grief.

Michael fell against the control panel.

The drive slipped from his pocket and slid toward the open maintenance hatch.

Both men reached for it.

Daniel caught the strap.

Michael caught Daniel’s injured arm.

The gondola jerked.

Michael lost his footing and fell halfway through the open hatch.

Daniel grabbed his wrist.

For several seconds, Michael hung above the valley.

Snow and rock moved hundreds of feet below.

“Pull me up!”

Daniel looked at the man who pushed his daughter from a cliff.

Every human part of him wanted to let go.

Every year of rescue training ordered him to hold on.

Michael saw the conflict.

“She will never love you,” he shouted. “You are a stranger!”

Daniel tightened his grip.

“Maybe.”

He clipped a carabiner to Michael’s coat.

“But I am not becoming you.”

The gondola reached the far station.

Park officers pulled both men inside.

Michael was arrested.

The drive survived.

The dead-man signal had already transmitted an encrypted copy of several key files to Rachel’s secure server.

Richard survived his gunshot wound and was taken into federal custody.

The lodge avalanche injured six agents but killed no one.

At the hospital, Emma watched the arrest through a live news feed with the sound muted.

Michael’s face appeared as officers led him through the snow.

She felt no triumph.

Only exhaustion.

For years, he had told her that she was unstable.

That she misunderstood.

That his anger was love.

That his control was protection.

On the cliff, when she said she would expose him, he stopped pretending.

A nurse entered.

“Your baby is strong enough for you to hold her.”

Emma began crying.

The nurse placed Rebecca against her chest.

The baby’s hand opened over Emma’s heart.

Daniel arrived three hours later with his arm in a sling.

He stopped at the doorway.

Emma looked up.

For a moment, both were unsure what the other needed.

Then she said, “Come meet your granddaughter.”

Daniel approached slowly.

Rebecca’s eyes remained closed.

“She is beautiful.”

“She has my mother’s name.”

Daniel sat beside the bed.

“Thank you.”

Emma studied him.

“Why did you save Michael?”

He knew she had seen the footage.

“Because letting him fall would not give us back what he took.”

“Did you want to?”

“Yes.”

The honesty mattered.

Emma moved the baby slightly.

Daniel placed one finger near Rebecca’s hand.

The tiny fingers closed around it.

He looked away, overwhelmed.

Emma watched him.

She still had questions.

Anger.

Grief.

A childhood that could not be rewritten.

But for the first time, she also had someone who had searched.

Not perfectly.

Not successfully.

But without stopping.

Outside the room, Rachel received the first decrypted files.

One document made her immediately call Agent Ross.

The Novaris fraud was only part of Project Haven.

The Vale family had created false identities for seventeen infants.

Emma was not the only stolen child.

And one of the other names belonged to a current United States senator.
