Chapter 6 - THE COST OF A SON

Cameron met federal investigators voluntarily.

His attorney advised him to say as little as possible.

He ignored that advice.

He described entering Martin’s office, seeing the draft term sheet, telling Derek about a billion-dollar investment, and mentioning Eleanor’s name to Kelsey.

He admitted photographing part of the seating chart.

He denied trading.

Phone records supported part of his account.

They also revealed messages he had deleted.

To Derek:

Biggest deal Mom has ever done. NMC woman at gala. Market will explode when it hits.

To Kelsey:

Table One is yours. I’ll move whoever I need to move.

To Martin:

You were right. Whitcomb looks like nobody.

Martin replied:

That is why people like her are dangerous.

Investigators asked whether Cameron understood the message.

He said no.

“Did you ask?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because I thought he meant she was influential.”

“Did he encourage you to confront her?”

“He said my mother needed to see that I could control a room.”

That sentence became central evidence.

Martin had manipulated him.

But Cameron had wanted to be manipulated in that direction.

He wanted permission to dominate.

Kelsey’s manager eventually admitted placing the option trade.

Kelsey had provided the information.

Derek arranged the shell account.

They planned to profit from the announcement.

When the ballroom incident threatened the deal, they began selling portions of the position as speculation drove the stock upward.

The SEC froze the remaining funds.

Kelsey’s public statement collapsed under evidence.

She stopped posting.

Derek tried to flee through Canada and was detained.

Cameron was not charged with insider trading because investigators found no evidence he participated in the trade.

He faced possible charges for unauthorized disclosure and obstruction related to deleted messages.

His cooperation reduced the risk.

Public opinion did not care.

He became a symbol of inherited incompetence.

Late-night hosts replayed the stomp.

Business schools discussed the incident.

Employees at Veyra circulated memes of a crushed name card beside collapsing stock charts.

Cameron stopped leaving his apartment.

Then Margaret visited.

She had not been there in months.

He opened the door wearing sweatpants and an old college shirt.

“You look disappointed,” he said.

“I am.”

“At least you’re honest.”

“I should have been honest years ago.”

He looked away.

Margaret entered.

The apartment was dark.

Empty bottles stood near the kitchen sink.

She opened the curtains.

Cameron covered his eyes.

“Why are you here?”

“To ask whether you understand what happened.”

“Martin used me.”

“Yes.”

“Kelsey used me.”

“Yes.”

“Derek used me.”

“Yes.”

He turned.

“You’re enjoying this.”

“No.”

“You always wanted proof I wasn’t ready.”

Margaret sat.

“I spent years preventing proof from reaching you.”

He laughed bitterly.

“What does that mean?”

“It means every time you failed, I changed the conditions. Every time you offended someone, I asked them to forgive you. Every time you broke a rule, I called it immaturity.”

“So this is your fault?”

“No.”

The answer was immediate.

“My protection shaped you. Your choices belong to you.”

Cameron sat across from her.

“What happens to the company?”

“We may survive.”

“And the deal?”

“Eleanor has not withdrawn.”

“Why?”

“Because she believes the technology matters.”

“After everything?”

“She distinguishes between an asset and the people mismanaging it.”

The sentence hurt.

Cameron looked toward the window.

“What happens to me?”

“That depends on what you do when no one restores your place.”

Margaret stood.

At the door, Cameron asked, “Do you still love me?”

She looked back.

“Yes.”

“Then why won’t you fix this?”

“Because I finally understand that fixing consequences is not the same as loving you.”

She left.

For the first time in his life, Cameron had no title, no office, no assistant, no board access, and no mother calling ahead to soften the room.

May you like

He had money.

But money without access felt smaller than he expected.
