Chapter 3 - You Set Yourself Up

Elena did not expose him the night before.
She waited.
Not because she wanted drama.
Because her attorney needed Julian to force the document publicly.
Coercion in a private room becomes one person’s word against another.
Coercion before three hundred witnesses becomes a record.
The slap was not part of the plan.
That was Julian revealing himself earlier than expected.
Now Elena stood under the chandelier with his handprint on her face and the contract in her hand, and the Rutherford family’s perfect wedding had become evidence.
Julian lowered his voice.
“Give me the page.”
Elena did not move.
Celeste stepped closer, her face pale beneath polished makeup.
“Elena, dear, this is not the place.”
Elena turned to her.
“The place was chosen when your son slapped me at the altar.”
A murmur moved through the guests.
Celeste stiffened.
“He was under pressure.”
“So was my mother when your husband made her sign.”
Celeste’s eyes sharpened.
“Elena.”
The warning was old money wrapped in one word.
Elena had once feared that tone.
Not anymore.
She lifted the contract page higher.
“This clause transfers my mother’s loan into a Rutherford-controlled marital trust immediately after the ceremony. This clause waives my right to challenge the loan terms. And this page—”
She turned the paper slightly toward Julian.
“—references a guarantee your father signed for a company that did not legally exist on the date printed.”
Julian’s face drained of color.
Ruth whispered, “What?”
Elena finally looked back at her mother.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner.”
Ruth shook her head, crying.
“You were protecting me.”
Elena’s eyes filled, but she kept standing.
“I was trying to.”
Julian grabbed for the page.
Elena stepped back.
Not far.
Just enough.
The guests gasped again.
A hotel security officer moved near the aisle.
Then another.
Julian saw them and forced his hand down.
“You set me up.”
Elena looked at her red-cheeked reflection in the polished marble floor.
“No,” she said. “You hit me in front of everyone. You set yourself up.”
The ballroom doors opened.
This time, no bride entered.
Three people in dark suits did.
Two fraud investigators.
One attorney.
Behind them came a uniformed hotel security manager holding a sealed folder.
Celeste’s hand flew to her necklace.
Julian’s breathing changed.
The lead investigator stopped at the end of the aisle.
“Elena Marsh?”
Elena answered without looking away from Julian.
“Yes.”
“We have the documents you submitted. Are you willing to provide the original page in your possession?”
Julian hissed, “Elena, don’t.”
She walked toward the investigator and handed him the contract page.
“Yes,” she said. “And I want to file a statement about the assault.”
Ruth made a broken sound.
May you like
Not of fear.
Of relief.
