Chapter 4 - Nobody Rewards Your Silence

At the hospital, Rebecca was examined while Emma slept against Charles’s chest in the waiting room.
He had not held a toddler in decades.
Still, Emma clung to his suit jacket as if she knew he was safe.
The doctor confirmed Rebecca’s injuries were not life-threatening and that the baby’s heartbeat was steady.
Rebecca cried when she heard it.
Not loudly.
Just one hand over her mouth, eyes closed, shoulders shaking.
Charles stood beside the bed.
“I should have come sooner,” he said.
Rebecca looked at him.
“I kept telling you I was okay.”
“I should have known you weren’t.”
She shook her head.
“No. He made me good at lying.”
Charles’s face crumpled for the first time that day.
Then he took her hand.
“Then from now on, nobody in this family rewards your silence.”
The emergency protective order was filed that night.
Trevor was removed from the home.
His access cards were disabled.
His financial permissions connected to Rebecca’s trust were suspended.
The family attorneys moved fast, but not carelessly.
Charles did not want revenge loud enough to endanger Rebecca’s case.
He wanted structure.
Safety plan.
Custody protection.
Medical documentation.
Security footage preserved.
House staff interviewed.
Digital locks changed.
Bank accounts separated.
Rebecca listened from the hospital bed, exhausted, while Emma slept beside her and the fetal monitor whispered steady reassurance in the background.
For the first time in months, decisions were being made for her safety, not Trevor’s comfort.
Trevor tried every strategy.
Apology.
Rage.
Charm.
Threat.
He texted Rebecca from a new number:
You know I didn’t mean it.
Then:
Your father is destroying our family.
Then:
No court will take a child from her father over one mistake.
Rebecca stared at the last message.
One mistake.
One strike.
One toddler screaming.
One unborn baby behind her hand.

One raised fist stopped only because the door opened.
She blocked him.
