Chapter 1

The riding crop cut through the air with a sharp black swish.

Then it struck Claire Vale across the upper back and shoulder.

Her whole body jerked forward.

One hand hit the marble floor to keep herself from collapsing completely.

The chandelier light trembled across the polished stone beneath her knees.

Her cream silk slip dress was torn at one strap. Her brunette hair hung messy around her face. Red marks showed across her arms and shoulders, not bloody, not graphic, but clear enough to tell the truth of the room.

Adrian Vale stood above her in a white dress shirt, sleeves rolled to his elbows, black vest fitted perfectly, dark eyes full of cruelty that no tailor could hide.

“Now you will learn respect.”

On the sofa, Vanessa crossed one leg over the other and lifted a champagne glass.

She was blonde, elegant, wearing a deep red evening dress, watching another woman’s humiliation like it was entertainment purchased with the house wine.

Claire breathed hard.

Her hand shook against the marble.

But she did not scream.

That irritated Adrian more than fear would have.

He wanted pleading.

He wanted panic.

He wanted proof that the woman on the floor understood the hierarchy he had built in his head.

Instead, Claire slowly reached toward the smartphone lying inches from her knee.

Adrian stepped closer.

“What are you doing?”

She lifted the phone to her ear.

Her voice was weak, but steady.

“Dad… just as you instructed.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

Vanessa leaned forward.

The riding crop slipped from Adrian’s hand and fell onto the marble with a small, final sound.

Claire raised her eyes to her husband.

For the first time that night, there was no fear left in them.

Her voice turned cold.

“Ruin his life.”

Adrian reached toward the phone.

Then stopped.

Something in Claire’s face made him hesitate.

The lounge doors opened hard.

Two security men in black suits entered with a security tablet and a legal folder.

Adrian spun toward them.

Vanessa stood too fast from the sofa, champagne nearly spilling from her glass.

One security man stepped forward.

“Mr. Vale, step away from her.”

Adrian stared in disbelief.

“This is my house.”

Claire slowly rose from the marble floor, still holding the phone.

Her body shook from pain, but her face was calm now.

Adrian took one step back.

Then another.

His color drained as the security tablet lit up with live camera feeds from the lounge, the hallway, the private elevator, and the estate office.

Vanessa froze.

Claire stood beneath the chandelier, bruised but no longer powerless.

“You should have checked who my father was.”

Adrian went down to one knee before anyone touched him.

May you like

Not because he was sorry.

Because he finally understood the room had never belonged to him.
