Chapter 7 - LYDIA

Lydia Vance was Arthur’s daughter.

Claire’s half-sister.

She was forty-one and had lived her entire life under her mother’s surname.

Arthur met Lydia’s mother before marrying Evelyn.

When Lydia was born, Arthur provided money privately but never acknowledged her publicly.

Evelyn learned the truth years later.

She insisted Arthur bring Lydia into the family.

Arthur refused.

He feared scandal, inheritance disputes, and damage to the company.

Evelyn never forgave him.

Richard discovered Lydia’s identity and tracked her for years.

Grant used her as insurance.

Claire looked at Arthur as agents prepared the warehouse entry.

“You abandoned her.”

“Yes.”

“And Grant knew.”

“Yes.”

“Did Mom’s trust include Lydia?”

Arthur closed his eyes.

“Half of it.”

The hidden trust had not been only for Claire.

Evelyn wanted to divide her shares equally between both daughters.

Richard and Grant needed Lydia out of the way as much as they needed control over Claire.

Grant had kept her hidden until she became useful.

The warehouse assault began at dusk.

Agents breached the east entrance.

Hale surrendered immediately.

Grant dragged Lydia into a rear corridor with a weapon pressed against her side.

Claire listened through the tactical radio.

She had never seen her sister.

Only a blurred drone image of a woman tied to a chair.

Grant demanded a vehicle.

He wanted Claire to deliver the trust certificate.

Arthur refused to let her go.

Claire said, “You already decided Lydia’s life was an acceptable price once.”

The words cut him.

He stepped aside.

Claire entered the warehouse carrying an evidence envelope.

Agents tracked her from concealed positions.

Grant appeared at the end of the corridor.

His blazer was gone.

His white shirt clung to his back.

He held Lydia in front of him.

She had Claire’s eyes.

Not exactly.

But enough.

Grant smiled when he saw Claire.

“You always come when family is involved.”

Claire stopped ten feet away.

“Let her go.”

“Give me the certificate.”

“It doesn’t help you.”

“It gives me leverage.”

“You don’t have anyone left to leverage.”

Grant looked at Lydia.

“Arthur came, didn’t he?”

Lydia’s face remained calm.

“Not for me.”

Claire said, “He came.”

Lydia looked toward her.

Claire held her gaze.

“He came for you.”

Grant tightened his grip.

“Touching. Now the envelope.”

Claire placed it on the floor and pushed it forward with her foot.

Grant forced Lydia to pick it up.

As she bent, Claire saw a small blade taped inside Lydia’s sleeve.

Lydia cut the restraint around one wrist.

Grant did not notice.

Claire kept him talking.

“You planned my whole life.”

“I improved it.”

“You murdered my mother.”

“I didn’t inject her.”

“You gave them her medical records.”

“Richard would have found another way.”

“You always say someone else would have done it.”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

“That’s how the world works.”

“No. That’s how cowards explain choices.”

Lydia moved.

She drove her elbow into Grant’s ribs and dropped.

Agents fired a nonlethal round into his shoulder.

Grant fell.

Claire reached Lydia first.

For a moment, neither sister spoke.

Then Lydia asked, “Did he really come?”

Arthur entered behind the agents.

He stopped several feet away.

Lydia looked at him.

Forty-one years of absence stood between them.

Arthur said, “I should have come before you ever had to ask.”

Lydia did not forgive him.

She did not turn away either.

Grant was placed in restraints.

As officers lifted him, he looked at Claire.

“You think this ends with me?”

Claire said, “No.”

He smiled through the pain.

“Then ask your father who signed the first order.”

Arthur’s expression changed.

The conspiracy had not begun with Richard.

Someone above him had authorized the original transfer.

Someone powerful enough to make Evelyn’s death disappear.
