Chapter 8 - Your Life First

But Megan knew the deeper victory was quieter.

It was not Grant hitting the chair.

It was not Julian revealing he was her brother.

It was not the folder proving Grant had tried to use Megan’s money and Julian’s name.

It was Megan saying, “I’m leaving,” and hearing her own voice survive the sentence.

It was Julian asking what she wanted instead of deciding for her.

It was evidence turning private fear into public truth.

It was the front door opening without anyone dragging her through it.

And it was Megan, years later, sitting across from a woman in Evelyn Price’s office.

The woman had a split lip partly hidden by makeup and a handbag clutched against her stomach.

“He says no one will believe me,” the woman whispered.

Megan looked at the side table.

No makeup box.

No lamp inspection.

Just documents, tissues, and a phone charger.

“People like him count on saying that before you test it.”

The woman wiped her eyes.

“What if I go back?”

Megan’s voice stayed gentle.

“Then we keep the door unlocked until you’re ready again.”

The woman began to cry.

Megan reached into her folder and slid over a safety checklist.

At the top, in Julian’s neat handwriting, were three words he had written for her the night she left Grant.

YOUR LIFE FIRST.

The woman touched the paper.

Outside, evening settled over the city.

Inside, Megan’s phone rested on the table.

Charged.

Visible.

May you like

Hers.

And when it rang, she answered without flinching.
