Chapter 7 - The Dramatic Version

On Ellie’s seventeenth birthday, the protected education account surpassed the amount Victor had stolen.

Not because he had paid every cent.

He had not.

Because Lena, Nora, restitution, scholarships, relatives, savings, interest, and Ellie’s own summer job had built something larger than what he destroyed.

That night, they sat around the kitchen table with a cake Ellie had decorated herself.

The frosting said:

$0.00 WHO?

Nora stared at it.

“That is grammatically questionable.”

Ellie laughed.

“It’s emotionally accurate.”

Lena laughed too.

For years, she had not believed she would ever laugh about the account.

Not because theft was funny.

Because the number no longer owned them.

After cake, Ellie pulled out the old tablet.

The cracked one.

The one that had shown the emptied account.

She had kept it in a drawer.

Lena stiffened when she saw it.

“Why do you still have that?”

Ellie set it on the table.

“Because I want to replace the screen.”

Nora frowned.

“Why?”

Ellie looked between them.

“I want to use it for college.”

Lena’s eyes filled.

“Are you sure?”

Ellie nodded.

“It was the thing that showed us the truth. I don’t want it to stay broken.”

Nora was quiet for a long moment.

Then she said, “That can be arranged.”

Of course it could.

Years later, people still told the dramatic version.

The upscale Princeton living room at night.

The city lights through tall windows.

The blue sofa.

The glass coffee table.

The spilled drink.

The laptop.

The black encrypted folder.

Ellie in pajamas, clutching a tablet showing her emptied college account.

Victor gripping Lena’s wrist.

Stay out of my marriage.

Nora entering fast and dropping her handbag.

Release her. Now.

Victor lunging with one fist raised.

Nora blocking his forearm.

The balanced pivot.

One powerful front kick to the upper chest.

Victor crashing backward into the sofa as his drink exploded across his shirt.

You chose the wrong house.

Victor gasping.

Who the hell are you?

Nora taking Ellie’s tablet.

The encrypted drive.

The command.

The folder marked with Victor’s initials.

The loading bar.

Ellie… don’t look at him.

May you like

It sounded like revenge.

And yes, part of it was.
