Chapter 1 - The Broken Birthday

The loud, obnoxious bass of upbeat pop music pulsed through the heavy walls of the suburban house, completely at odds with the terrifying scene unfolding in the back hallway. Outside, in the sprawling, sunlit backyard, dozens of female guests laughed loudly, drinking expensive mimosas and admiring the massive clusters of perfectly arranged pink balloons bobbing in the warm afternoon breeze. It was supposed to be a flawless, joyful celebration for a little girl turning five years old.
But inside the house, the atmosphere was thick with a suffocating, terrifying darkness.
Ryan, a handsome man in his early thirties wearing a dark blue t-shirt, dark jeans, and gray sneakers, sprinted down the hallway. His chest was heaving, his dark hair messy as a primal, blinding panic completely consumed him. He had spent the last twenty minutes frantically searching the crowded backyard for his daughter, asking every smiling guest if they had seen her, only to be met with indifferent shrugs.
He threw open the heavy wooden door to the tiled laundry room.
Ryan stopped dead in his tracks. The frantic, terrified energy drained entirely from his body, instantly replaced by a cold, paralyzing horror.
There, wedged awkwardly in the narrow, dusty space behind the massive white washing machine, was his five-year-old daughter, Emma.
She was wearing the beautiful pink floral dress and the shiny white shoes he had bought specifically for her birthday. Her hair, which he had so carefully tied up that morning, was a messy, tangled disaster. But it wasn't the ruined hair that made Ryan's blood run cold. It was the fact that his beautiful, innocent little girl was curled into a tight ball, sobbing uncontrollably, her tiny body trembling violently against the cold tile floor.
