Chapter 1 - I Saw Daddy Leave Him There

Talia came through the back door holding a newborn baby in her arms, and Mara knew from her daughter’s face that something terrible had followed her home.

The kitchen was warm.

Eggs were frying on the stove.

Coffee steamed beside the sink.

Cold autumn light came through the window over the small wooden table where Talia’s cereal bowl still sat half-full.

Then the back door slammed open.

Eight-year-old Talia rushed inside barefoot in yellow pajamas, hair tangled, cheeks wet with tears, both arms wrapped carefully around a tiny baby bundled in a thin blue blanket.

“Mom!” she cried. “He was outside!”

Mara spun so fast her elbow knocked the egg carton off the counter.

Eggs cracked across the floor.

She dropped to one knee.

“Talia, slow down. Give him to me.”

The baby made a tiny broken sound against Talia’s chest.

Mara’s heart nearly stopped.

She took the newborn carefully, one hand under his head, the other securing his back, and pulled him against her left shoulder. He was cold. Too cold. His little face was red from the air, but he was breathing.

Alive.

Mara pressed her cheek gently against the blue blanket.

“Daniel!” she shouted toward the hallway. “Call 911!”

The camera of the room seemed to turn before he appeared.

Daniel stepped into the kitchen from the back doorway.

Plaid overshirt.

Work pants.

Short dark hair damp with sweat despite the cold morning.

He froze when he saw the baby in Mara’s arms.

Not shocked.

Caught.

Mara saw the difference.

“Daniel,” she said. “Call 911.”

He did not move.

His eyes flicked from the baby to Talia, then to the open back door.

Then he stepped forward.

“Give him to me.”

Mara’s body reacted before her mind finished understanding.

She rose, keeping the newborn locked safely against her chest with her left arm. When Daniel reached for the baby, Mara blocked his hand with her forearm.

“Don’t.”

His face tightened.

“Mara, give me the baby.”

She planted both feet.

“No.”

He reached again.

This time with force.

Mara’s right hand came up and struck him across the face.

One hard, clean slap.

Daniel’s head snapped sideways. His shoulder hit the doorframe, and for the first time in their marriage, Mara saw fear replace anger in his eyes.

Talia stood behind her mother, shaking.

Then she raised one trembling hand and pointed directly at him.

“I saw Daddy leave him there.”

The kitchen went silent.

Mara looked down.

Daniel’s right boot was wet with dark barn dirt.

Caught in the laces were tiny blue blanket fibers.

The same color as the blanket wrapped around the newborn in her arms.

Daniel followed her gaze.

His face drained.

Outside, the back door still hung open, letting cold air crawl across the broken eggs on the floor.

And Mara understood the baby had not simply been found.

May you like

He had been abandoned.

By her husband.
