Chapter 4 - GRANT'S LAST NIGHT
Grant Bennett died on a wet highway after his truck crossed the center line and struck a concrete barrier.
Police ruled that he had fallen asleep. Sabrina told everyone he had been exhausted and drinking.
Nolan had never believed it completely. Grant rarely drank, and the toxicology report showed only a small amount of alcohol. But grief, business pressure, and Sabrina’s certainty pushed the family toward the easiest explanation.
Detective Ward reopened the crash file.
The truck’s onboard data had been lost after the vehicle was released to Bennett Emergency Systems for disposal. Richard signed the release.
The mechanic who inspected the wreck reported a damaged brake line, but the note disappeared from the final file.
Camille received another anonymous message with an address for a storage unit.
Police searched it and found boxes rented under Grant’s name. Inside were company invoices showing that Richard had approved the sale of defective emergency oxygen regulators to rural hospitals. Grant discovered the defect after several patients died.
He planned to report the company.
A digital recorder held part of an argument between Grant and Richard.
“You’ll destroy everything I built,” Richard said.
“People died, Dad.”
“People die in hospitals.”
“Not because we falsify safety tests.”
A third voice entered near the end.
Sabrina.
“If Grant talks, what happens to us?” she asked.
The recording ended.
Nolan listened twice. His face collapsed with each repetition.
Richard denied involvement in Grant’s death. He claimed Grant had stolen company files and become unstable. Sabrina, he said, manipulated both brothers and would say anything for money.
But financial records showed Richard transferred two hundred thousand dollars to Sabrina one week after Grant’s funeral.
He called it a widow’s settlement.
Ward called it suspicious.
The case against Sabrina strengthened when police found her at a roadside motel. She did not resist arrest. She asked only whether Harper was alive.
During interrogation, Sabrina admitted putting the medication into the unicorn cup.
Camille felt physically ill when Ward told her.
But Sabrina insisted she had not intended to kill Harper.
She claimed Richard ordered her to create a medical emergency that would place Harper in the hospital while he persuaded Nolan to sign temporary trust documents. According to Sabrina, the dose was supposed to cause dizziness and vomiting, nothing more.
Richard supplied the medication.
“Why did you agree?” Ward asked.
Sabrina stared at the table. “Because he told me he could prove Nolan killed Grant.”
She said Richard had spent eighteen months convincing her that Nolan sabotaged Grant’s truck out of jealousy over their old affair. He threatened to turn the evidence over to police unless she helped.
“Did you believe him?”
“I wanted to.”
“Why?”
“Because if Nolan killed Grant, then I didn’t marry the wrong brother.”
The cruelty of the answer stunned even the detective.
Sabrina then revealed that the pantry camera had captured more than the poisoning.
It captured Richard changing the contents of the silver container after she measured the dose.
She realized too late that he had made it lethal.
The missing footage was not deleted to protect Sabrina.
It was deleted to hide Richard.
But the full remote backup required a second encryption key.
