Chapter 9 - The Scratch

Years later, people still told the dramatic version.
The busy police station.
The tipped chair.
Otis lunging toward Kendra.
Take the blame for Marcus.
Elliot stepping between them.
Viola pleading, Do this for your brother.
Kendra pulling up her sleeve to show the fresh scratch.
The attorney saying, Do not touch my client again.
Kendra placing her phone beside the written statement.
I saved every message.
The officer asking, These were sent before the children were left?
Kendra looking at her mother and nodding.
Marcus knew exactly what he was doing.
It sounded like a story about screenshots.
And yes, part of it was.
There was satisfaction in watching Otis’s rage become documented behavior inside a building full of witnesses.
There was satisfaction in seeing Viola’s tears fail to erase timestamps.
There was satisfaction in knowing Marcus’s own messages destroyed the misunderstanding he wanted Kendra to perform.
But the deeper story was not the phone.
It was the scratch.
Small.
Shallow.
Almost easy to dismiss.
Exactly the kind of mark families tell daughters not to make a big deal about.
But Kendra pulled up her sleeve in the police station and let everyone see it.
Not because the scratch was the worst thing her family had done.
Because it was fresh.
Visible.
Undeniable.
Proof that the same family asking her to protect Marcus had just failed to protect her.
That scratch became the line.

Before it, Kendra had been the responsible daughter.
After it, she became a witness to her own life.
