The video call.
Dad, please… he’s your grandson.
The cold face on the phone.

Emma twisting off the diamond ring.

And it was Emma, years later, sitting beside Ethan at a little kitchen table while he drew a picture of a ring shaped like a door.
“What’s that?” she asked.

“That’s the door you opened.”
