Chapter 5 - Congratulations

Now Clara held the folded report in her hand while the whole room waited.

Charles extended his palm.

“Give it to me.”

Clara looked at his hand.

“No.”

“I am your father.”

The sentence stunned even him.

Because he had just denied it seconds earlier.

Clara’s voice was low.

“Pick one.”

His face flushed.

Andrew stood.

“Dad, sit down.”

Charles snapped, “You stay out of this.”

Lucas pushed his chair back.

“No. I want to know why our sister just got hit at dinner.”

Our sister.

Clara almost broke at that.

Small words.

Late words.

But real.

Helen started crying openly now.

“Please, Clara.”

Clara looked at her.

“Did you ask him to stop when he made me sign birthday thank-you notes to donors because I had to earn my party?”

Helen flinched.

“Did you ask him to stop when he told me I didn’t need a college tour because he didn’t know whether he was investing in blood?”

Charles’s face changed.

Andrew turned slowly toward him.

“You said that?”

Charles did not answer.

Clara continued.

“Did you ask him to stop when he told me at sixteen that I should be grateful for the roof because some fathers walk away from other men’s mistakes?”

Lucas whispered, “Jesus.”

Helen covered her face.

Clara held up the folded report.

“No. You told me not to provoke him. You told me to think of Andrew and Lucas. You told me to be patient until he softened. So here it is, Mom. I’m done being soft.”

She unfolded the first page.

Charles stared at it with a kind of hunger.

He wanted vindication.

That was the ugliest part.

Even after slapping her, he wanted proof that his cruelty had been instinct instead of failure.

Clara placed the first page on the table and turned it toward him.

Paternity Analysis

Alleged Father: Charles Whitfield

Child: Clara Anne Whitfield

Probability of Paternity: 99.9998%

The room went still.

Charles stared at the page.

His mouth parted slightly.

No words came.

Clara watched him read it again.

And again.

As if the numbers might rearrange themselves out of mercy.

Andrew stepped closer.

Lucas leaned over the table.

Helen made a sound like she had been struck.

Clara said, “Congratulations. You hit your own daughter.”

No one moved.

Charles slowly lowered himself into his chair.

Not from weakness.

From impact.

He looked suddenly older.

Smaller.

But Clara did not mistake collapse for remorse.

Power often looks fragile when caught.

That does not make it innocent.
