Chapter 4 - The Marble Heard It

Frank noticed the phones.
Of course he did.
Men like Frank notice exits.
He waited until after dinner, when guests were relaxed, champagne glasses full, music soft, and everyone expecting a father-daughter toast.
Instead, he cornered Lena beside the head table.
At first, he kept his smile on.
“Time to act like family,” he said.
Lena’s stomach dropped.
“Not here.”
“Exactly here. He won’t embarrass you in front of guests.”
She looked toward Daniel.
He was speaking to an older uncle ten feet away, watching her from the corner of his eye.
Frank followed her glance.
“Don’t look at him. Look at me.”
Patricia appeared behind Frank, silver gown glittering, face serene.
“Lena,” she said softly, “this doesn’t need to be ugly.”
“It already is.”
Patricia’s eyes hardened.
“Your father needs help.”
“He needs accountability.”
Frank’s smile vanished.
“You think you can talk that way because of his money?”
“No,” Lena said. “Because I’m done paying for your lies.”
That was when Frank grabbed her hair.
Now Daniel’s phone showed the sending status.
Secure files sending…
Frank took one step toward him.
Daniel stood instantly, placing himself between Frank and Lena.
“Do not come near her.”
Frank tried to recover.
His voice boomed for the room.
“This is a private family matter.”
Daniel’s eyes were cold.
“You smashed your daughter’s face into the floor at her wedding. It stopped being private when the marble heard it.”
A few guests gasped.
One of Daniel’s cousins moved closer to Lena with a napkin and asked softly, “Can I help?”
Lena nodded.
The woman knelt beside her carefully, helping her sit upright without touching her nose.
Patricia’s voice cut through the silence.
“She tripped. Everyone is emotional.”
Lena laughed.
It hurt.
Blood touched the napkin.
“She tripped?”
Patricia looked at her with warning.
That old look.
The one that said: fix this for us.
Lena looked back.
Not this time.
Daniel checked his phone.
The sending status changed.
Files delivered.
Frank saw it.
His face drained completely.
“What did you send?”
Daniel did not answer him.
He turned to Lena.
“Do you want medical help?”
“Yes,” Lena said.
That yes shook the room more than the fall.
Because in the Hart family, pain had always been managed privately.
Ice packs.
Makeup.
Excuses.
Not today.
A wedding guest who happened to be an ER nurse moved forward. “I can check her until paramedics arrive.”
Frank snapped, “No one called paramedics.”
Daniel lifted his phone again.
“I did.”
Patricia’s calm cracked.
“Daniel, think about what this will do to Lena.”
Lena looked at her mother.
“What it will do to me?”
Patricia’s lips parted.
Lena’s voice shook, but she forced every word out.
“He hurt me. You watched. You smiled. And now you want me to protect the story.”
The ballroom went still.
Patricia looked around and realized people had heard.
Really heard.
May you like
Not the polished version.
The bare one.
