Chapter 4 - The Pregnancy That Bought a Throne

Vanessa had never intended to become anyone’s mistress.
At least, that was the story she told herself.
She grew up outside Hartford with a mother who cleaned offices at night and a father who disappeared before her eighth birthday. By seventeen, Vanessa understood that beauty could open doors, but only strategy kept them open.
She studied wealthy women carefully.
Their clothes.
Their pauses.
Their confidence in rooms where other people waited for permission.
When she met Elise, Vanessa expected to hate her. Instead, she found a woman who apologized to waiters, remembered staff birthdays, and wore old earrings because they had belonged to her mother.
Kindness should have made Elise harder to betray.
It made her easier.
Vanessa became the friend Elise confided in during the worst months of her marriage. She listened when Elise described Adrian’s coldness. She held her hand after an argument. She promised that Adrian loved her but was under pressure.
Then she went upstairs and repeated every word to him.
Adrian did not fall in love with Vanessa.
He fell in love with how she reflected him.
She called him brilliant.
She laughed at his cruelty.
She treated his attention like a prize.
The affair began after a foundation gala. It continued in hotels, offices, and eventually Vale House itself. Vanessa told herself that Elise already had everything. She told herself Adrian was trapped. She told herself powerful men always left hesitant wives for women who believed in them.
The pregnancy changed the affair from fantasy into leverage.
Vanessa had shown Adrian a test six weeks earlier. He stared at it, then at her, and smiled with something like relief.
He wanted an heir.
Elise had suffered two miscarriages during their marriage. After the second, Adrian became distant for months. He never said he blamed her, but grief sharpened everything he did not say.
Vanessa understood the wound and stepped into it.
She began choosing nursery colors before the divorce papers were drafted.
She imagined herself descending the grand staircase as Mrs. Vale.
She imagined Elise removed from photographs.
She imagined winning.
But inside the foyer, with police present and Bennett Meridian lawyers securing the house, Vanessa began to understand that Adrian had not told her everything.
“Bennett Meridian,” she whispered again. “Why would they care about her?”
Adrian ignored her.
An officer asked Vanessa to move into the library for a separate interview. She resisted, insisting she had witnessed Elise behaving irrationally. Rachel Kim immediately requested that every statement be recorded.
As Vanessa walked away, she saw the sealed divorce folder still lying on the floor.
For the first time, she wondered whether the papers were valid.
In the library, a young officer asked what happened.
Vanessa gave the version she and Adrian had rehearsed.
Elise became hysterical after learning about the pregnancy.
Elise threatened Adrian.
Adrian used the crop only to frighten her after she grabbed Vanessa.
There had been no previous violence.
Vanessa spoke smoothly until the officer asked one simple question.
“Why was the security camera already pointed toward Mrs. Vale before the incident?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“I don’t know.”
The officer wrote something down.
“And why was the divorce folder prepared before tonight?”
“Adrian wanted to tell her.”
“Tell her what?”
“That we were going to be a family.”
The words sounded uglier outside her imagination.
From the foyer came the muffled sound of Adrian arguing with someone. Then a new voice entered the house—deep, measured, and cold.
Vanessa could not hear the exact words.
But she knew immediately who had arrived.
Elise’s father.
When the library door opened, Rachel Kim stood there with another attorney.
“Ms. Cole, we need to advise you that Vale Global records show payments made to a consulting company registered in your name.”
Vanessa’s mouth went dry.
Adrian had called the payments gifts.
Rachel continued. “Those transfers may involve corporate funds.”
“I didn’t know.”
“That may be true.”
Vanessa looked past her toward the foyer. “I need to speak to Adrian.”
“You’ll have an opportunity later.”
The door closed again.
Vanessa sat alone beneath a portrait of Adrian’s grandmother and pressed one hand against her abdomen.
The child had been her guarantee.
Her place in the mansion.
Her future.
But now a darker fear surfaced.

If Adrian had lied about Elise, the house, and the money, what else had he lied about?
And if the pregnancy was the weapon that secured Vanessa’s victory, what would happen when the truth about it was tested?
