Chapter 5

One year later, Emily returned to mile marker 118.
Not alone.
Rosa drove.
Elias followed in another car because he said he was “in the area,” which everyone knew was a lie.
Emily stood on the shoulder in a warm coat, holding Grace against her hip.
The slush was gone.
The road was dry.
Cars passed under a clear sky.
She looked at the place where she had fallen.
For months, she had thought of that spot as the worst place in her life.
Now she understood it differently.
It was where Derek abandoned her.
But it was also where Rosa found her.
Where Grace stayed alive.
Where Emily stopped mistaking survival for love.
She took a breath.
Then turned back to the car.
Rosa opened the door.
“You okay?”
Emily looked at Grace.
Then at the highway.
“Yes.”
And this time, the word did not feel like a lie.
Years later, people still told the dramatic version.
The pregnant wife in the green dress.
The black SUV.
The highway.
The cruel husband.
The mysterious call.
At midnight, disable the SUV.
Elias… make him regret ever touching me.
It sounded like revenge.
And maybe part of it was.
But Emily knew the deeper truth.
The real punishment was not the SUV shutting down.
It was Derek discovering that the woman he left on the roadside had never been powerless.
Only patient.
Only grieving.
Only pregnant.
Only waiting for the moment when proof could speak louder than pain.

He had thrown her out beside the highway because he thought she had nowhere to go.
He forgot that her father had built roads beneath her feet long before Derek ever offered her a ride.
