Chapter 1 - One Command Changed Everything

Graham Whitmore released the dog on Emily’s father.
Not a warning.
Not a bluff.
A command.
He shoved one hand into the older man’s shoulder, forcing him back half a step on the brick courtyard, then snapped his fingers toward the massive black German shepherd standing beside the patio table.
Titan’s ears shot forward.
Emily screamed from inside the locked kennel.
“Dad, run!”
Her bare feet slipped against the dirty metal floor as she slammed both palms against the bars. Her dusty-pink cardigan was torn at one shoulder. Her cream top was streaked with dirt. Her cheek was bruised, her hair tangled, her voice already raw from begging.
Her father did not run.
Frank Callahan stood in the center of the Whitmore mansion courtyard with a wooden cane in one hand and fury held so tightly behind his eyes it looked almost calm.
Graham pointed at him, smiling.
“Titan, take him down!”
The dog exploded forward.
Claws scraped across the brick.
A whiskey glass trembled on the patio table.
Vivian Whitmore, elegant in her emerald-green dress, stepped back with a small gasp that sounded more offended than afraid.
Titan charged straight at Frank.
The old man planted his boots.
His injured hip shifted.
His cane lowered diagonally across his body like a barrier.
When the dog was inches away, Frank’s voice cracked through the courtyard like a rifle shot.
“Platz!”
Titan braked so violently his paws skidded across the brick.
His chest dropped.
His front legs folded.
Then the huge dog lay flat on his stomach at the end of Frank’s cane, muscles trembling, ears locked on the older man’s voice.
Graham’s smile disappeared.
Frank did not look surprised.
He lowered his voice.
“Bleib.”
Titan stayed.
Perfectly.
Still.
Graham snapped his fingers again.
“Titan. Up.”
The dog did not move.
Vivian’s face tightened.
Emily clutched the bars, crying now for a different reason.
Hope.
Frank stepped around the dog with controlled authority and reached the kennel. He pushed one hand through the bars and pressed it against Emily’s shaking shoulder.
She folded toward his touch like she had been waiting for it in the dark.
“Daddy,” she sobbed.
Frank’s jaw tightened.
“I’m here.”
Graham backed away instinctively.
Then caught himself.
“You don’t get to come onto my property and give orders.”
Frank turned from Emily.
One measured step.
Then another.
He pointed the end of his cane toward the visible padlock on the kennel.
His voice dropped.
“Open that cage. Now.”
Graham’s hand moved toward his pocket.
The key ring was there.
Everyone could see it.
Vivian’s lips parted.
Titan’s eyes remained fixed on Frank.

Graham looked down at the dog, then back at the old man he had assumed was helpless.
For the first time since Emily had married him, Graham Whitmore looked afraid inside his own courtyard.
