Chapter 10 - That We Stayed

On Lily’s sixteenth birthday, Emma placed a small box beside her cake.
Noah, now nine, immediately said, “Is it money?”
Lily rolled her eyes.
“You always hope it’s money.”
“I’m practical.”
Emma smiled.
“Open it.”
Inside was Mr. Button.
Cleaned.
Repaired.
Wearing a tiny cream ribbon around his neck.
Lily stared.
Then laughed through tears.
“Mom, I’m sixteen.”
“I know.”
“He looks better than when I was six.”
“We all do.”
Lily picked him up carefully.
There was no ring inside him now.
No secret.
No courtroom.
Just fabric, thread, memory, and survival.
Noah leaned over.
“Does he still know things?”
Lily hugged the rabbit to her chest.
“Yes.”
Emma looked at her daughter.
“What does he know now?”
Lily smiled.
“That I told.”
Emma’s eyes filled.
“And?”
“That we stayed.”
Outside, Ohio rain tapped softly against the kitchen windows.
Inside, candles glowed over a lopsided homemade cake.
No judge’s bench.
No legal documents.
No Daniel.
No Vanessa.

No silent warning from across a courtroom.
Only Emma, Lily, Noah, and the worn rabbit that had once carried a lie until a child was brave enough to set it down.
