Chapter 1 - The Water Breaks

The luxury kitchen of the sprawling suburban estate was a masterclass in modern opulence, featuring gleaming marble floors, high-end stainless steel appliances, and sprawling quartz countertops. But right now, that pristine marble floor was littered with the chaotic aftermath of a massive dinner party, piled high with greasy plates, half-empty wine glasses, and stacks of dirty dishes.
Standing near the center of the kitchen was Emily. She was thirty years old and eight months pregnant, looking breathtaking yet fragile in a light yellow floral maternity dress. But her face was stark pale, she was drenched in cold sweat, and her body was wracked with sudden, severe waves of agonizing physical pain.
Without warning, a sharp, violent contraction seized her lower abdomen. She gripped her pregnant belly tightly, letting out a sharp gasp. As her knees buckled, her elbow bumped against a stray ceramic plate resting on the counter. The dish crashed to the floor, shattering into sharp pieces, right as a warm rush of fluid pooled across the marble tiles around her feet.
Emily slid down the cabinets, collapsing hard onto the floor amidst the broken porcelain.
"Nathan! My water just broke!" Emily cried out, her voice cracking with a desperate, terrified panic as she looked toward the archway leading to the living room.
Standing in the archway was her husband, Nathan. He was in his thirties, wearing a sharp black suit jacket over an unbuttoned white shirt. Beside him stood his mother, Patricia, a sixty-year-old woman wearing a striking red dress and a heavy pearl necklace.
Patricia took one look at the fluid pooling on the marble, crossed her arms, and let out a cold, venomous snort.
