Chapter 1 - The Audit Is Complete

Daniel threw the full mug of hot coffee across Claire’s face because she pulled her own bank card out of his reach.
The splash hit her cheek, neck, and upper chest.
Coffee soaked into the cream satin robe she was still wearing from bed. Heat burned across her skin. She jerked sideways with a cry, shoulder slamming into the dining chair hard enough to knock it across the kitchen tile.
The mug hit the marble breakfast table and rolled, empty now, leaving a dark trail beside the fruit plate.
Bright morning light filled the modern kitchen.
White cabinets.
Clean counters.
Two coffee cups.
A wedding ring on Claire’s finger.
A bank card beside her phone.
And Vanessa sitting at the table in a white blouse and jewelry, smiling like she had just watched a rude server get corrected.
Claire bent over the table, gasping, one sleeve pressed to her eyes.
“That card is mine!” she choked.
Daniel stood over her in a navy business suit and open-collar white shirt, breathing hard, face sharp with entitlement.
“Then learn to obey.”
He stepped in immediately.
One hand clamped around Claire’s wrist.
The other reached for the bank card.
Claire’s body shook from pain, but something inside her refused to go limp.
She planted her free palm against his chest and shoved backward with everything she had.
Daniel stumbled half a step.
Not far.
Enough.
Claire yanked her wrist free before he could take the card.
Vanessa lifted her own coffee cup with lazy amusement.
“Give it to him and stop acting dramatic.”
Claire looked at her sister-in-law through wet lashes.
Coffee dripped from her chin onto the marble.
For three years, Vanessa had smiled at Claire like that.
At dinners.
At holidays.
At family meetings where Daniel explained Claire’s own finances to her.
At charity events where Claire paid the bill and Vanessa told people she was “too fragile to understand business.”
Now Vanessa smiled while Claire’s skin burned.
Daniel slammed the empty mug down onto the table.
The sound made Claire flinch.
He leaned inches from her face and pointed sharply toward the front door.
“You either obey or you leave.”
The words hung in the kitchen.
Obey.
Leave.
As if marriage were a house he owned and she was a guest who had failed the rules.
Claire breathed through the pain.
One breath.
Then another.
Something cold and clear moved through her.
She looked at Daniel.
Really looked at him.
The handsome face she had once trusted.
The clean suit.
The controlled posture.
The rage hiding under the language of “family decisions.”
Then she looked at Vanessa.
Perfect blouse.
Perfect nails.
Perfect cruelty.
Claire lifted her left hand.
Daniel’s eyes followed the movement.
Slowly, with one decisive motion, she removed her wedding ring.
Daniel’s face changed.
“Claire.”
She placed the ring beside the stained mug.
The kitchen went silent.
Then her phone vibrated beside the bank card.
Claire glanced down.
The notification lit the screen.
Miriam: The audit is complete…
Daniel saw the name.
His anger weakened instantly.
Vanessa lowered her cup.
Her smile faded.
Claire picked up the phone.
Then the bank card.
Her hand was trembling, but her voice was not.
“Good,” she said. “You’re both here.”
Daniel stared at her.
“What audit?”
Claire wiped coffee from the corner of her mouth.
“The one you told me I was too stupid to request.”
Vanessa stood too fast, her chair scraping the tile.
“Daniel?”
He ignored her.
His eyes stayed on Claire’s phone.
“Give me that.”
Claire stepped back.
“No.”
Daniel laughed, but it came out wrong.
“You think one message changes anything?”
May you like
Claire looked at the ring beside the mug.
“No,” she said. “The message means it already changed.”
