Chapter 10 - Choosing the Road

On the first anniversary of the crash, Lena drove again.
Not far.
Not fast.
Maya sat in the passenger seat, pretending to be casual and failing.
“You’re gripping the door,” Lena said.
“I’m supporting the vehicle emotionally.”
“You hate not being in control.”
“I am an attorney. Control is my love language.”
Lena laughed.
Her hands tightened around the wheel, then loosened.
The road was dry.
Morning light.
No rain.
No phone call.
No Adrian’s voice in the speakers.
They drove to a small overlook outside the city.
Lena parked and sat quietly for a while.
Her forearms still ached in cold weather.
A thin scar cut near her hairline, mostly hidden beneath her blonde braid.
She looked out at the water.
Maya waited.
Finally Lena said, “I used to think survival would feel louder.”
“What does it feel like?”
Lena flexed her fingers.
“Like choosing what my own name signs.”
Maya nodded.
“That’s a good feeling.”
“Yes.”
Lena reached into her bag and pulled out a folded piece of clear plastic.
The hospital belongings bag.
Maya groaned.
“You brought the bag?”
“One last trip.”
“What are we doing?”
Lena stepped out of the car and walked to the trash can near the overlook.
She held the folded bag for a moment.
Then placed it inside.
Not thrown dramatically.
Not ripped.
Placed.
Maya stood beside her.
“You sure?”
Lena looked at the sky.
“Yes.”
“The recording?”
“Archived.”
“The evidence?”
“Preserved.”
“The lesson?”
Lena smiled.
“Internalized.”
Maya linked her arm carefully through Lena’s.
Together, they walked back to the car.
No sealed bag.
No leather folder.
May you like
No man waiting with documents.
Just Lena, opening the driver’s door herself, placing both healed hands on the wheel, and choosing the road without anyone on the phone telling her where to go.
