Chapter 7 - The Dramatic Version

Years later, people still told the dramatic version.
The bright suburban entryway.
The open front door.
Eleanor struggling in with silver crutches, hospital wristband, medical boot, discharge papers under one arm.
Margaret stepping into her path.
The slipper kicking one crutch sideways.
The crutch clattering across the hardwood.
Eleanor falling onto her hip, protecting her braced leg.
My room now. Move.
Eleanor on the floor saying, This is my house.
Harrison in the garage doorway.
You’re sleeping in the garage.
Margaret taking the phone and medication bottle.
The drag through the steel door.
The cold concrete.
The rubber mat in the far corner.
The lock turning.
Eleanor pulling up the mat.
The hidden steel safe edge.
You forgot what’s under the mat.

And yes, part of it was.
