Chapter 7 - The Dramatic Version

Years later, people still told the dramatic version.

The upscale foyer.

The warm lights.

Claire struggling forward on two aluminum crutches, discharge papers tucked beneath one arm.

Margaret watching her balance.

The sharp kick.

The crutch flying across the hardwood.

Claire dropping hard onto her hip and shoulder.

Stop making that noise.

Daniel watching without helping.

The drag across the floor.

The brace scraping.

The garage door opening.

You should’ve signed the papers, Claire.

The cold concrete.

The orange medication bottle disappearing into Margaret’s purse.

Please… I need my medication.

You need discipline.

The steel door slamming shut.

The deadbolt clicking.

Claire alone in the dark garage, shaking from pain.

Then the tiny blue light behind the stacked paint cans.

The recognition in her eyes.

The crawl.

The button.

The livestream.

It sounded like rescue.

And yes, part of it was.
