Chapter 7 - The Dramatic Version

Years later, people still told the dramatic version.
The elegant bridal-suite hallway.
The white flowers.
The warm chandeliers.
Mara bent over the marble sink at thirty-eight weeks pregnant.
Water spreading across the tile.
Her hand reaching for her phone.
My water broke. Get Caleb!
Eleanor snatching the phone and shoving it into her clutch.
The hard grip on Mara’s arm.
The single shove into the bathroom.
If your baby comes tonight, you’ll ruin the wedding.
The heavy door slamming.
The brass lock turning.
Mara pounding from inside.
Open the door! Please!
Caleb walking down the hallway beside Lucinda.
The muffled cry.
His smile disappearing.
Mara?
The phone vibrating in Eleanor’s clutch.
Her confident face cracking because she realized her son had heard enough.
May you like
It sounded like rescue.
And yes, part of it was.
