Chapter 4 - Do Not Speak Over Her

Now the camera blinked above them.
Silas moved toward Nora slowly.
“Turn it off.”
Nora looked at him.
“Why?”
His eyes darted toward the ceiling.
“Because this is family.”
Vivienne seized the opening.
“Yes. Exactly. We should talk calmly.”
Nora touched her stinging cheek.
“You slapped me.”
Vivienne’s lips pressed together.
“You were hysterical.”
“You tore my medical records.”
“You were weaponizing them.”
“You shoved me into a wall while I’m pregnant.”
Vivienne took a breath.
Then said with cold precision, “I corrected you.”
Silas flinched.
Not enough.
Nora saw it.
He was horrified.
But not shocked.
That was its own answer.
The phone on Nora’s desk vibrated.
The alert had gone through.
Vivienne lunged toward it.
Nora moved faster than she thought she could.
“Don’t.”
Vivienne stopped at the tone.
Not the volume.
The tone.
Nora sounded like someone who had already left the room emotionally and was only waiting for her body to follow.
Silas stepped between them now.
Too late.
“Nora, please. Let’s slow down.”
She looked at him.
“When?”
“What?”
“When should we have slowed down? When your mother called this house family property? When you signed a transfer before I saw it? When she ripped my pregnancy records? When she hit me? Tell me where you think the line begins.”
Silas had no answer.
Vivienne did.
“The line begins when a wife forgets her place.”
The room went silent.
Even Silas looked at her then.
“Mom.”
Nora nodded once.
“Thank you.”
Vivienne frowned.
“For what?”
“For saying it clearly.”
The phone vibrated again.
Caroline Bennett was calling.
Nora answered on speaker.
Her voice shook, but she did not hide it.
“Caroline.”
The attorney’s voice came through sharp and calm.
“I received the alert. Are you safe?”
Nora looked at Vivienne.
Then at Silas.
“No.”
Silas closed his eyes.
Vivienne whispered, “Don’t you dare.”
Caroline heard it.
“Who is in the room with you?”
“My husband and my mother-in-law.”
“Are you injured?”
Nora touched her cheek.
“She slapped me and shoved me into the wall. I’m pregnant.”
Silas said quickly, “She’s not hurt badly—”
Caroline cut him off.
“Do not speak over her.”
Silas went quiet.
Nora almost cried from the relief of that sentence.
Do not speak over her.
So simple.
So impossible in the Vale house.
Caroline continued.
“Nora, listen carefully. Do you want medical assistance?”
Nora looked down at the broken ultrasound frame.
The tiny picture beneath glass.
“Yes.”
Vivienne turned toward Silas.
“Stop this.”
He stood frozen.
For years, Silas had survived his mother by not choosing.
But a man who refuses to choose still makes a choice.
Nora finally saw his.
She said into the phone, “And I want the property documents preserved.”
Caroline’s voice softened slightly.
“Good. Do not touch them. Do not let anyone remove them. I’m contacting Dr. Marsh’s office and sending the emergency filing.”
Vivienne backed toward the desk.
May you like
Nora lifted her phone.
“The camera is still recording.”
