Chapter 4 - The Attorney He Never Saw Coming

Elise Monroe arrived nine minutes later, still in the navy dress she had worn to the wedding as Sofia’s “old college friend.”
That had been the cover.
Javier never knew she was the attorney who reviewed the condo papers.
Elise entered the suite, saw Sofia’s face, and stopped.
Her expression changed from legal professional to furious friend.
Then back again.
Good attorneys know when rage should become paperwork.
“Sofia,” Elise said softly, “I’m here.”
Sofia’s eyes filled.
“I recorded it.”
“I know.”
“You heard him?”
“Yes.”
Carmen stared at Elise.
“Who are you?”
Elise turned.
“The attorney you should have hoped she didn’t have.”
Javier tried to speak.
Elise raised one hand.
“Don’t. Every word from this point forward should be through counsel.”
The police separated everyone for statements.
Sofia sat in the chair near the window while a paramedic cleaned the small cut on her lip.
Her mother arrived before the paramedic finished.
Isabel Parker was not a dramatic woman.
She did not scream.
She did not curse.
She walked into the suite, saw her daughter in the torn wedding dress with blood on her cheek, and placed one hand over her own heart.
“Mija,” she whispered.
That one word almost destroyed Sofia.
She had held herself together through Carmen.
Through Javier.
Through the police.
Through the recording.
But when her mother touched her hair gently and said, “I’m here,” Sofia broke.
Isabel wrapped both arms around her.
“Your father was right,” she whispered. “That condo was your peace.”
Sofia cried into her mother’s shoulder.
“I almost signed it.”
“But you didn’t.”
“I married him.”
“You can undo that.”
Sofia looked at Javier across the room.
He was speaking to an officer, performing calm, acting offended, his tuxedo still immaculate.
“I loved him,” she said.
Isabel kissed her forehead.
“I know. That is why betrayal hurts. Not because you were stupid. Because you were honest.”
The recording became the center of everything.
It showed Carmen shoving the transfer papers against Sofia’s chest.
Carmen demanding the signature.
Sofia refusing.
The slap.
The hair grab.
Javier appearing in the doorway.
Just don’t bruise her face too badly.
Sofia saying, Keep talking.
It also captured more.
Javier saying, “We need it more.”
Carmen calling it discipline.
Javier blocking the door.
The women acknowledging it had gone “too far.”
No one could call it misunderstanding.
No one could call it wedding stress.
No one could call it tradition without admitting tradition was being used as a weapon.
Javier was charged with coercive conduct and related offenses tied to the attempted property transfer and intimidation, while Carmen faced assault charges. The exact criminal process took months, but Sofia did not wait for the court to decide what she already knew.
The next morning, still wearing the bruised remains of her wedding hairstyle, she filed to annul the marriage.
Javier’s family tried to stop her socially before they tried legally.
Carmen called Isabel.
No answer.
Javier texted Sofia from a cousin’s phone.
You are destroying both families over one slap.
Sofia replied once.
May you like
No. You destroyed the marriage before the slap.
Then Elise took over all communication.
