Chapter 10 - A Door

Dr. Reeves brought a small black box as a joke and nearly got removed from the apartment until he opened it and revealed chocolate truffles.
Emily stared at him.
“Too soon.”
“It’s been three years.”
“Still too soon.”
He looked genuinely ashamed until she smiled.
Then everyone laughed.
Later, after the guests left, Marcus stayed to help with dishes.
Emily stood at the sink.
He dried plates beside her.
Quiet.
Comfortable.
Almost ordinary.
She looked at him.
“Marcus?”
“Yeah?”
“I’m glad you didn’t come into the room first.”
He paused.
“The box was too much?”
“The box was terrifying.”
“I know.”
“But if you had walked in before I saw the proof, I think I would have thought you were another person trying to tell me who I was.”
He nodded slowly.
“That’s why Evelyn said to let the records speak first.”
“Smart woman.”
“Terrifying woman.”
“Both.”
Emily smiled.
Then reached into the drawer and removed the small silver key from the black box.
She had placed it on a new chain.
Not around her neck.
Not yet.
But close.
“I used to think the click inside the box was the sound of danger,” she said.
Marcus looked at the key.
“What is it now?”
Emily held it in her palm.
“A door.”
His eyes filled.
She stepped forward.
Awkwardly.
Carefully.
Then hugged him.
Marcus froze for half a second.
Then hugged her back like a man holding a miracle he had promised never to crush.
Emily closed her eyes.

For the first time in her life, family did not feel like a debt collector standing over her bed.
It felt like someone waiting for permission outside the door.
