Chapter 1 - The Ruined Blazer

Vanessa grabbed the ruined lapel of Julia’s blazer and jerked her forward in the middle of the dean’s office.

The fabric pulled hard against Julia’s shoulder.

Her application folder almost slipped from her hand.

Across the room, Dean Howard Whitaker looked up sharply from behind his polished wooden desk.

Margaret covered her mouth.

Robert froze near the bookcase.

But neither parent moved to stop Vanessa.

That hurt worse than the grip.

The morning sunlight poured through the tall windows behind the dean, spilling over bookcases, upholstered chairs, campus rooftops, and framed certificates arranged with the quiet confidence of an institution that had rejected thousands of people politely.

Julia stood in the center of that room wearing a black professional blazer ruined by copper-orange bleach stains.

Irregular marks ran down the sleeves.

One large patch spread across the front like a burn.

Her white blouse was clean, but the blazer made her look like she had walked through a disaster on the way to the most important interview of her life.

Vanessa smiled.

Blonde hair styled perfectly.

Navy-blue dress fitted neatly at the waist.

Gold jewelry catching the light.

She tugged Julia’s lapel again, exposing the worst stain to the dean.

“Tell him why you wore that disaster.”

Julia stumbled one hard step.

Then planted both feet.

She caught Vanessa’s wrist.

Not violently.

Not wildly.

Firmly.

The way someone holds a line after years of being pushed backward.

She removed Vanessa’s hand from the blazer and released it without striking back.

Her breathing shook once.

Then steadied.

She straightened the damaged lapel with fingers that refused to tremble and turned toward Dean Whitaker.

“Because someone wanted me too ashamed to walk through that door.”

Vanessa’s smile tightened.

Margaret stepped forward immediately.

Her burgundy formal suit looked expensive, her pearl necklace resting at her throat like proof she belonged in rooms like this.

She grabbed Julia’s elbow and tried to pull her away from the desk.

“Stop humiliating this family over an accident.”

Julia sharply freed her arm.

She remained facing the dean.

Robert’s jaw hardened.

Vanessa folded her arms, still smug, certain Julia had already destroyed herself.

Dean Whitaker said nothing.

That silence made the office feel smaller.

Julia walked to the desk and placed her application folder firmly in front of him.

The impact shifted several papers.

She opened it to the first page.

Her finger rested beside her surname.

Garrett.

The dean’s eyes moved from the bleach stains to the file.

He pulled the folder closer with one decisive movement.

His gaze stopped on the last name.

His hand became completely still.

The professional distance left his face.

Something old moved behind his eyes.

Recognition.

Shock.

Almost grief.

Vanessa’s smile faded.

Margaret lowered her hand.

Robert took one uneasy step closer, trying to see the file.

Julia remained motionless, unsure why the room had changed.

Robert’s voice turned tense.

“Is there a problem with her application?”

Dean Whitaker slowly rose from his chair while holding Julia’s file.

A small old photograph slid partly from between the papers.

Julia saw only the corner.

A young woman in a white coat.

A hospital corridor.

A child’s hand gripping the woman’s sleeve.

The dean looked from the photograph to Julia’s face.

His voice came low.

May you like

Stunned.

“Wait… you’re her?”
