Chapter 4 - Consent Before Every Action

They went to a private clinic affiliated with a women’s advocacy center, not an emergency room where Marcus might find them through insurance alerts.

Lily was examined.

Bruising along the scalp.

Tenderness in the neck.

Older bruises on her upper arm.

A mark on her wrist.

The clinician photographed everything with Lily’s consent.

Consent.

That word came before every action.

Can I touch your arm?

Can I take this photo?

Can I ask what happened?

Can Sofia stay?

Lily cried harder each time someone asked.

Not because it hurt.

Because asking made her understand how long she had lived without being asked.

Sofia stayed beside her.

Evelyn sat in the hallway, already moving legal pieces into place.

A protective order petition.

Emergency financial safeguards.

Digital copies of the video.

Statements from Audrey, the restaurant manager, and the server who saw Marcus reach for Lily again.

By midnight, Lily was in Sofia’s condo, showered, wrapped in soft clothes that did not belong to Marcus’s house.

She sat on the couch holding tea she had not drunk.

Her phone was on the coffee table.

Face down.

Marcus had called thirty-seven times before Evelyn had the number routed through counsel.

Vivian had sent eleven messages.

The first said:

You are destroying your husband.

The second:

This is not how a wife behaves.

The seventh:

Come back before this becomes permanent.

The eleventh:

You have no idea what Sofia is doing to you.

Lily stared at the last one.

“What does she mean?”

Sofia sat beside her.

“She means I’m not letting them reach you alone.”

Lily looked at her mother.

“Were you always this scary?”

Sofia almost smiled.

“Only after you were born.”

Lily’s lips trembled.

Then she began to cry again.

“I thought you’d be disappointed.”

Sofia’s eyes filled.

“In you?”

“I stayed.”

Sofia took a slow breath.

This answer mattered.

“You survived inside what you could understand at the time.”

Lily covered her face.

“I hate that I still miss him.”

Sofia nodded.

“I know.”

“How can I miss someone who did that?”

“Because he was not that every minute. That is why it worked.”

Lily looked at her.

The sentence hurt and helped at the same time.

Marcus had not started with hair pulling in restaurants.

He started with devotion.

Flowers sent to her office.

Handwritten notes.

Calling Sofia “the most important woman in Lily’s life” during their engagement dinner.

He cried when proposing.

He remembered Lily’s coffee order.

He looked at her like a miracle.

Then small corrections began.

That dress is a little much.

My mother felt dismissed when you disagreed.

You interrupt me when you’re nervous.

You’re too close to your mom.

You make me feel like the villain.

Then isolation.

Cancelled lunches.

Shared location “for safety.”

New phone plan.

Joint accounts.

Vivian’s constant presence.

Marcus’s anger when Lily had private calls.

Apologies from him afterward that sounded like confessions but functioned like resets.

I hate how much I love you.

You know how to push me.

I’m terrified of losing you.

Help me be better by not embarrassing me.

By the time Lily understood she was afraid, fear had been renamed marriage work.

Sofia listened as Lily told pieces of it through the night.

Not all.

Enough.

At dawn, Lily finally slept in Sofia’s guest room.

Sofia stood in the doorway for a long time.

Then closed the door halfway, leaving the hall light on.

Evelyn sat at the kitchen island with a laptop.

“You should sleep too,” she said.

Sofia sat across from her.

“What happens now?”

May you like

Evelyn looked at the paperwork.

“Now Marcus becomes very sorry.”
