Chapter 6 - The Definitions Cage
The full history came out in fragments.
Grant had started hurting Lily when Sarah worked late.
Not always with fists.
Sometimes with gripping.
Shoving.
Cornering.
Pressing fingers into the soft place below her ribs while smiling and saying, “Still lying?”
He punished her for locked doors.
For eye rolls.
For calling her father.
For telling a teacher she was tired.
For leaving dishes in the sink.
For “making Sarah anxious.”
The first time he hit her hard enough to leave a deep bruise, he cried afterward.
That confused her.
He sat on the floor outside her room and said, “You bring out something ugly in me.”
Lily was fifteen.
She believed that sentence for three months.
Then he hit her again and did not cry.
After that, the rules changed.
No telling.
No doctors.
No private calls with Sarah’s sister.
No changing clothes with the door locked.
No drama.
No lies.
Everything was a lie if Grant disliked it.
That was how he built his cage.
