silent

CHAPTER 1

The folder slammed onto the boardroom table so hard the glass water pitchers shook.

Avery Lawson flinched but did not reach for the pen.

Across from her, Marissa Lawson stood in a cream designer suit, sharp makeup perfect, diamonds bright at her ears, fury tightening every line of her face.

The luxury boardroom was silent except for the soft hum of the city outside the tall windows.

At twenty-four, Avery looked too young to be standing in that room.

Simple navy dress.

Plain flats.

No jewelry except her father’s old watch on her wrist.

Her eyes were watery, but her spine stayed straight.

Marissa shoved the company-share folder toward her.

“Sign away your shares now.”

Avery looked down at the document.

Transfer of Voting Stock.

Irrevocable Assignment.

Lawson Medical Systems.

Her father’s company.

Her inheritance.

The last thing he had trusted her to protect.

Avery pushed the folder back.

“I’m not giving you what Dad left me.”

Marissa’s face twisted.

Then she came around the table fast.

Before Avery could step back, Marissa shoved her hard.

Avery fell to the polished boardroom floor and braced herself on one hand.

Pain shot up her wrist.

The papers slid across the table.

For one second, she was on the floor beneath the portraits of men who had built the company, while the woman who married her father stood over her like she had finally put Avery where she believed she belonged.

Then the boardroom door opened.

Marissa froze.

Board Chairman Charles Ellison stepped inside in a dark suit, silver hair neat, expression calm and lethal.

Behind him came the board members.

Men and women in formal suits.

All silent.

All staring.

Marissa slowly turned.

Her face drained of color.

Charles looked at Avery on the floor.

Then at the folder on the table.

Then directly at Marissa.

“She doesn’t need your permission. She became CEO this morning.”

The room changed.

Marissa stepped back like the words had struck her.

Avery stayed frozen on the floor, breath caught in her chest.

CEO?

Charles moved toward her and offered his hand.

This time, someone helped her stand.

Avery rose slowly, shaken, humiliated, but stronger than she had been sixty seconds earlier.

Marissa’s lips trembled.

“This is impossible.”

Charles picked up the share-transfer folder with two fingers, as if it were something dirty.

“No, Mrs. Lawson. What you tried to do was impossible. This was already decided.”

And that was when Avery understood.

May you like

Her father had not left her alone in the company.

He had left her a trap for anyone who tried to steal it.
