Chapter 1 - The Red Light Under the Floor

Grant kicked the cracked feed bowl out of Lily’s hands like she was an animal who had eaten before being told.

Grain exploded across the straw.

The hens scattered, wings flapping against the weathered wooden walls of the coop.

Lily flinched on her knees, barefoot in the dirty beige farm dress Grant had made her wear that morning, mud streaked across her arms and knees, messy brown hair clinging to her face.

She had been feeding the chickens because Grant said “useful wives don’t sit in houses they didn’t earn.”

Then his expensive navy suit crossed the coop floor like wealth had wandered into cruelty by mistake.

He grabbed her upper arm.

Hard.

Lily gasped as he yanked her upright and drove her shoulder into the wooden post beside the nesting boxes.

The impact knocked the breath from her chest.

Her hand flew to her ribs.

Grant leaned close, face smug, white shirt open at the collar as if this were just another part of his polished routine.

“She belongs where she acts useful,” he said.

At the doorway, Evelyn froze.

Lily’s mother stood in an elegant cream wrap dress, jewelry bright against the farm daylight, heels sinking slightly into the dirt outside the coop.

For one second, Evelyn looked like she could not understand what she was seeing.

Her daughter.

Her only child.

Barefoot.

Bruised.

Covered in mud.

Inside a chicken coop on the heritage farm that had once been Lily’s safest place in the world.

Then Grant reached for Lily again.

Evelyn moved.

She charged into the coop, caught Grant’s wrist with both hands, and forced his arm sharply downward as she stepped between him and her daughter.

“Take your hand off my daughter.”

Grant stared at her.

Then laughed in her face.

He tore his wrist free and straightened his suit like Evelyn had wrinkled the fabric, not interrupted an assault.

Lily slid down against the wooden post, breathing hard.

Grant pointed toward the white farmhouse beyond the coop door.

“Investor dinner is at seven,” he said. “Don’t embarrass me.”

Lily’s hand moved behind the nesting box.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Her fingers found the loose plank.

Then the hidden button beneath it.

Click.

A faint red recording light began blinking under the shadow of the floorboards.

Evelyn noticed.

Her eyes dropped for one second.

Then rose back to Grant.

Her expression changed.

The horror drained away.

Something colder replaced it.

Control.

Grant’s arrogant smile weakened.

He had expected tears.

Screaming.

A mother begging him to stop.

Instead, Evelyn looked at him with the calm of a woman who had just realized the trap was not around her daughter anymore.

It was around him.

“Perfect,” Evelyn said. “Invite everyone.”

Grant’s face twitched.

“What does that mean?”

Evelyn did not answer.

She turned slightly, just enough to shield Lily from him.

“Lily, can you stand?”

Lily’s voice came thin.

“I think so.”

Grant scoffed.

“She’s fine. She’s always dramatic.”

Evelyn’s eyes stayed on him.

“Then you won’t mind everyone seeing how fine she is.”

His jaw tightened.

The red light blinked beneath the loose plank.

Once.

May you like

Twice.

Recording.
